I had a 2nd-generation iPod (the main difference was the wheel being updated to touch instead of the mechanical scroll wheel which frequently broke or needed cleaning) in high school. It was a huge purchase for me at the time. It had FireWire. It had fancy neodymium transducer magnets in the earbuds. And it had the best user interface.
I broke mine after it dropped on the headphone jack with headphones plugged in and disconnected the jack from the circuit board. I opened it up and soldered it back to working order, though I eventually sold it to a friend shortly after.
