As a reminder, I am in Rome for a while attending and speaking at the TTI/Vanguard “Generation Techs” conference so there won’t be any typical PSTAM posts until I return early next week. I have been hanging out with Josh Spear and we’re wondering if you know of any interesting things to do in Rome. Drop a comment if you’ve got an idea.
So far the conference has been amazing and I’ve met many accomplished people like Nicholas Negroponte.

While at the Rome Cavalieri, make sure you rock the breakfast buffet. It’s worth it. Plus they have the best coffee in the world. That’s the nicest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. I’m totally jealous.

And this is only a little list :) Unfortunately I do not live in Rome, but in North Italy. But Rome is one of the most beautiful italian cities…

Go to the pantheon and be impressed by what was for a VERY long time the largest free-standing dome in the world. Then go out and to your right on the other side of a low wall the is a gelateria with amazing gelato. You won’t regret it. If you want, take your cone and make a left as you exit the gelateria and there is a cool and random obelisk on an elephant’s back in a small plaza. It’s not some great and well known site, but it one that many people don’t bother to see, and it’s so closeby, so why not? There should be some kids playing football there, and that’s always fun to watch for awhile. These are the kinds of things to do when all the main sites are overflowing with July tourism. Find some small places off the regular list. Just walking around Rome offers plenty to see. I pounded the pavement there for 6 days straight – exhausting but well worth it. Consider a Roma Pass – includes metro/bus card and some museum entries, just read the specifics. Food – try some of the turkish doner kabab that can be found around the main train station – cheap, filling, tasty, and easy to walk with. Great lunch.
You must be having lots of fun there. Although I don’t really have a place for you to check out, I do have to say you should be very careful. While I was visiting there with my father, he almost got robbed by this women pretending to be crazy/beggar.
On another note, check out real Italian pizza of course.

Depending on how much time you have,

1. Colusseum
2. Roman Ruins (use your imagination for how impressive it must have been)
3. Trevy Fountain ! toss a coin, and swear you’ll never go back, lol
4. Take your picture in St. Marco’s square, but anymore than that into the Vatican was a waste of money imho

You have to go and see the Sistine Chapel. I was at St. Peter’s twice, and both times the chapel was closed for cleaning. Tell me the chances of that happening 2 different times in 2000 and 2004? I heard they only clean it like twice a year. So you have to do that for me. Or for yourself better yet

when in Rome….
Rome is one of the pillars of current day civilization …. There are more things to see, visit and comprehend than the whole of North America (including canada).
Perhaps spend less time peeping at Mhz’es and catch up on some “general knowledge”
… Don’t mean to be harsh … but as a Prof. of history reading a question on the internet asking “hey dude I’me in Rome, what is there to do here?” does come across as a rather “Blonde” one ….

The daytime touristy stuff is pretty cut and dry but if you want to go out at night, there is a great pub crawl that starts at the Spanish Steps.
