Samsung Unleashes 24-inch LED Backlit LCD

April 11, 2007 · 7 comments

Samsung is among the first of several manufacturers working on getting LED backlit LCD displays to consumers. They have announced a new 24-inch display sporting some impressive features. Current LCD displays rely on bulky, power hungry and heat emitting fluorescent bulbs to lighten up the display.

In contrast, LED backlights take up far less space, power and are tremendously more efficient. The final result is a display with more vivid and saturated colors. Samsung’s 24-inch display utilizes S-PVA technology to provide unparalleled performance – a 180 degree viewing angle in addition to a contrast ratio in excess of 1000:1.

Everywhere but this review of the Samsung XL20, I have read that LED backlights in fact allow for thinner design. That review suggests they are actually the reason for that monitor’s 9cm thickness! I guess they haven’t seen all the super-thin laptop monitors which use LED backlights, but I do wonder why in the heck that monitor is so thick, nonetheless.

While I’m sure this is good news for computer geeks everywhere, I’m more interested in knowing how long till we see this in large TVs. Or will the long-awaited OLEDs or SEDs hit the market first?
