Linux Friendly LinkSys Router Upgraded

December 2, 2005 · 4 comments

LinkSys, a popular company specializing in router and other internet devices, has always been up to spec with producing high quality routers. For the longest time, their WRT54G wireless router has sold extremely well due to low price and its ability to be hacked for increased functionality. The WRT54G has a huge fanbase, with people constantly writing new Linux firmware for the router. Hacking the firmware can make this router perform and have the same abilities as a $600 router as stated by Wi-Fi Planet here. Increases in operating range, using the router as a bridge or extender.

LinkSys has recently announced that they will embrace this community by releasing an upgraded version of this router dubbed the WRT54GL. The L version, L standing for Linux, comes with a Linux firmware preinstalled. Get your WRT54GL at Amazon.

I just wanted to echo how wonderful this router is. I just upgraded the firmware on mine today, and now I’ve got an enormous Linksys and Airport Express network – and the music hasn’t stopped since I set it up this afternoon…

Ah, I’ve got an Airport Express and a Netgear. Really considering getting this LinkSys one to extend the range of my current network.

This is easily the best 802.11g router out there. I run DD-WRT on mine.
