Get Your Groovr On
There’s a new social network community in the making and it goes by the name of groovr. With the rise of Web 2.0 and every other web app somehow relating to social media, it can get a little hard to remember what each service does. Fortunately for you, I’ll give you everything you need to know about groovr in this post.
Purpose: Find cool hangouts. Meet new people. Locate your friends.
How It’s Different: Most of that is done via texting on your mobile phone.
Target Demographic: The young MySpace/Facebook group that constantly want to let their friends know what they’re up to and see what their friends are doing.
Example Use: Check into a movie theater, check to see if any of your friends have checked into the theater yet. Take a picture with your friends from your camera phone and upload it to groovr as well as leave a comment about the venue - all from your mobile phone.

Groovr officially launched December 29th and currently has a few new user incentives in place. The first 250 users that refer someone to groovr get a free t-shirt while the person that refers the most people every month will get a Sidekick mobile phone.
Realistically: Groovr relies heavily on mobile phone interaction. If you don’t have a decent text message package on your phone plan, using groovr might become expensive. However, groovr does have an expanding feature set to make it worth your while. When you “checkin” to places, groovr automatically adds the place to the database if it doesn’t yet exist. From there you can edit the place’s specifics and set it as public or private so only you and your friends can checkin there.
In addition, people can “mingle” with region-specific forums as well as upload and view images. Try out groovr for yourself and let me know what you think. Personally, I don’t do a lot of texting on my phone (Pantech C300 - small screen, smaller keys) so I don’t think I will be making much use of groovr at the moment.

Man, this looks pretty sweet. I wish Facebook would’ve thought to implement something like this since that’s where the core base of my friends are….

Can’t find anywhere on their site to get support if one is unable to register so hopefully the developers read this!
Groovr won’t accept my location, I tried Swansea, UK; Swansea, United Kingdom and Swansea, Wales and none of them work. I can understand only rolling it out to the US at first but please make it clear that the rest of us shouldn’t bother! I could put in a random US location but it kind of defeats the object.

Paul, wasn’t this your project? I don’t know that I can use another start up that copies the ‘r’ from flickr…reminds me too much of zooomr or something. This would be cool if it is implemented into facebook or something, but I just don’t see myself using it as a stand alone web app.
