Media Temple’s Grid-Server Coming Next Weekish
It has been along time coming but Media Temple is ready to unleash their latest offering, the (gs). What makes the (gs) so different from the current (ss) Shared Server platform? Everything. First off, Grid-Server technology ensures that your website can grow as fast as it needs without being limited by the server. That means (gs) customers won’t experience the so called digg effect.

The new (gs) is located at Media Temple’s Tier 4 facility in Southern California with redundant everything. Pesky service outages (with the exception of maintenance) are pretty much a thing of the past. In addition the Grid-Server is great for anyone from new user to professional coder. New users will love the one-click WordPress installation (as well as automatic updates) and revamped account center while coders will indulge in subversion access and a capable Ruby on Rails environment. I’m no RoR expert but when Kyle found out that the (gs) will have up to 1GB of dedicated RAM for Ruby apps, he started bouncing off the wall. Other luxuries include MySQL 4.1.11, PostgreSQL 7.4.7 and the ability to switch between PHP 4 and 5.

If you think this is hot, wait until you see the new AJAX-ified webmail interface.
Media mavens will love how the new Grid-Server plans start out with 50GB of storage and 1TB of bandwidth. The (gs) is living up to be a fantastic server platform regardless of what you plan to do with it. If you’re looking for reliable and affordable web hosting or just another server to keep track of your coding sandbox, check out the (gs) soon.

Any speculation as to pricing, this might be a good plan for me :).
Yeah, I think now’s the time to go (mt).
Damn, contrasting that with cPanel…
I would assume the price would be the same as the current pricing system, since existing customers are being upgraded.
That’s cool! Any idea what happened to Shared Server 6.0, though? Does this replace it?
I’d been waiting ss6 to make my switch and it seems to be in perpetual limbo. Can you tell anything more from the inside?
I’m on the beta, and I’ve found this to be nice, but probably way way way to expensive for me once it comes out.
Of course, I’m always of the belief that anyone on the beta should get the service free for life…
The (gs) replaces the (ss) to the best of my knowledge. As far as pricing is concerned that aspect has yet to be made public but my assumptions say that if prices vary from the (ss) they won’t be too bad. IE, the (gs) won’t reach (dv)-level pricing.
Makes me glad to be a (mt) customer.
Rub it in why don’t you, Ben. :)
Hopefully it’ll be the (ss) 6.0, and keep the same, or at least similar, prices.
That would make me leave dreamhost very very fast.
Woot. It pays to be nosey. I typed in “www.inconcrete.com” from the preview image above and behold:
Yay! :D
Hmm awesome, I hope it does replace the upcoming (ss) 6.0. I’ve been waiting for that email from MM saying they will be updating to the new system. The beta has been going since the end of June.
I really can’t wait. :) A friend of mine’s been beta testing it for a while, and he loves it. His testing account is only 30GB though?
50GB though.. That’s nuts. How could someone have use for all that? I mean, it might be nice to back up files with, but immagine downloading them all should something happen.. :o
Looks like it might be time to break down and switch to Media Temple.
Seems odd that they’d be running such old databases?
Any idea if this will have ‘true’ multi-site capabilities, I signed up for an account a few months ago but had to cancel as they didn’t have this feature which would have gave me email headaches. If this is the case I might just have to give it another whirl. Thanks for the review.
This is all speculation, but I think that the (gs) IS going to be (ss) 6.0.
All the features on the ss6 page (http://www.mediatemple.net/services/webhosting/ss/linux-standard/ss6_sneak_peek/index.php) are the same as the features of the (gs), and it says that ss6 is in beta as of June 27th, which is around the same time the (gs) beta started (I can’t remember exactly when it was).
One sad thing though. These may be false numbers listed, but the prices I see on the (gs) beta page say it’ll be much higher than the (ss). I’m not sure if we’re allowed to share that info or what, so I’m not going to risk anything.
OK, I’ve got some more info. We’re not allowed to share prices, but I know that this is going to completely replace the (ss). There will be no more (ss).
For more details, see an entry on my blog, at http://tcmb.deathaxe.net/blog/
I’m actually really excited about this.
Man. Thank God it’s finally coming.
I used to speculate an age ago about how a grid type system could revolutionise shared hosting and what it can handle; thank God I chose the host that decided to have the balls and resources to implement it!
Since the grid server evidently evolved from shared server 6.0 (a free upgrade for current shared server customers), I assume it’s a complete replacement. I imagine the logistics with such a change for so many customers are immense, so I’m not too surprised it took them so long.
Just to clarify things, the Grid is the same as (ss) 6.0. I know because I am lucky enough to work at (mt). :)
Does anyone happen to have a shot of the new AJAX web mail?
Ryan, the rumour is that it’s @Mail, which NetNation also uses. If this is true, and MT has not done much customization, @Mail is reasonably good, but nothing to get really excited about. It seems to work best in IE 6+, but is lackluster in Firefox and Safari. Pretty bare bones, except the bloated interface.
Ryan:
This is a screenshot of the “Simple - Ajax” new webmail. There are actually four flavors: “Simple - Ajax”, “Simple - Any Browser”, “Advanced - IE6+”, and “Advanced - Mozilla”.
I’ll get screenshots of the rest up tomorrow.
Argh. My HTML was removed.
Anyways, you can find the screenshot here:

RE: http://static.julianbh.com/screenshots/ps/mt/ajax.png
I hope thats not the webmail interface of what they have built because thats @mail (www.atmail.com) and I was hoping they had built their own.
Hopefully I misunderstood :)
Otherwise, the new specifications and features are looking very attractive for us MT customers :)
The grid is activated! :)
This Grid Server thing, is same as the shared plan! You can not edit the httpd.conf! You can NOT have virutal host! you can not have your own subdomain to be masked!
Mediatemplate virtual dedicate server, yes you can do that and start from 70 USD with PHP performance, many other companies offer much better dial on the virtual deciated server.
So if you want to edit the httpd.conf, forget about the Grid Server plan on the Mediatemplate.
regarding @mail. Yes we are building our own interface. Getting feedback now from @mail so we can do what we set out to do with the mail app. We decided to launch without the new mail interface…Didn’t want it to hold us up.
Regarding Stella’s post: Root access is not something we’ll be offering now on the (gs) Grid-Server. The (dv) Dedicated-Virtual servers are made expressly for that. Concerning the price point, some of the other virtual plans out there are cheaper but they’re probably not offering the level of power and equipment that we do. It really depends on what you need.
We will be upgrading the (dv)’s soon. you can read about it here: http://mediatemple.net/company/whats_new/
Cheers!
Well I have been a fan of @Mail for some time (Used it on DC-Hosting) and I guess I was just hoping for something in your style, and to hear that you are doing that, I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but @Mail is a great mail application and i’m fine with waiting! All good things come to those who wait etc ;)
Thanks, and great work with the Grid Server, so far all seems great.
Keir
I’ve been hosted at [mt] for a about a year now - I have always had good things to say about them, and the switch to Grid Server is not going to change that. Pricing (I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet) starts at $20 a month for their basic package (100GB of space and 1TB “short-path” bandwidth). What’s rather nice is that pre-existing users are able to get grandfathered in at their existing rates to gs-lite (same deal but half the space and bandwidth).
I thought service outages were a thing of the past?

So finally mediatemple is out. But looks like we back in jungle age. Media temple offer most unstable hosting plan as they say “The last hosting plan you ‘ll ever needâ€. Here I am sure this is my last hosting plan I will have with them.
