A few years ago I wanted to try to read more. I gave myself a challenge to read 24 books in 2017 and got the first generation Amazon Kindle Oasis. I loved that Kindle. I still have it but really began to hate that it did not use a USB-C port for charging.
I eventually got the Paperwhite SE which has USB-C and a better display with an adjustable warm front light. It does the job, though I have yet to find a cover for it that I like and does not add much bulk—nothing beat the first-gen Kindle Oasis there.
All that being said, if I were in the market for an e-reader today I would probably heavily consider the Boox Palma, a phone-sized device with an e-Ink display running Android.
