Xtorrent Beta 1 is Out

September 17, 2006 · 10 comments

Newsfire and Acquisition creator Dave Wantanabe is currently working on a BitTorrent client for OS X dubbed Xtorrent. As with all of Dave’s creations, Xtorrent looks amazing. Try out the public beta for yourself. While it does look great, feature-wise I don’t think it’s any competition to Azureus, performance-wise it’s no Transmission and cost-wise, it won’t be free when it’s released. Update: Performance should be comparable to Transmission.

This is the best torrent client I’ve ever used!

Haha, we all know you’re biased Glenn. I like Azureus+plugins because I can give it torrent feeds and it downloads when the feed is updated and it finds something according to the filter I setup.

That sounds like exactly something I’m looking for. More features then Transmission and less resource intensive then Azureus. While it may not be free, I’ve payed for another clients before, particularly Newsleecher and Unison. If this does turn out to be a good client, I wouldn’t mind forking over some dough for it.

I’d like utorrent to make it to the mac to see even more competition. Personally, it’s the best client for Windows.

Xtorrent’s core is libtransmission, so it should be performance-wise equivalent to Transmission.

That’s good to know David!

Shame that Xtorrent uses libtransmission instead of libtorrent. libtransmission has significant documented bugs that no one seems to do anything about. Maybe Wanatabe will continue work on it? I like Xtorrent, but back to BitRocket for me until the announce issue is resolved :/

So if it will do what Transmission does, and at a price tag that everyone likes… why would anyone buy Xtorrent?
I am not suggesting David is out to con anyone, (I bought Newsfire), but having played with it yesterday it seems to just be Transmission with a search front end.

Agreed Maxim, Xtorrent will be useless on most private trackers. Sigh.
