The Next iPod

February 11, 2006 · 44 comments

AppleInsider and ThinkSecret have gathered information for what the next iPod, that would be the 6th generation for those of you keeping a tally at home. From the presumably leaking information, it will not have a click wheel but rather a touchscreen with OSD to control all of the iPod’s functions. Tech Manifesto has put together a great compilation of all the iPod info, definitely worth a visit. Here are some of the highlights.

I wish something like this would happen.

That would be one awesome iPod… if only it could stream wirelessly! Still, if it’s released without wireless it won’t stop me from upgrading.

Yea, i really doubt this will happen. At least not for another year. Though it would be un-effing-believable.

If this iPod did come out, I would buy it in an instant. It’d have to have 60GB or more storage space though.

Notch up one vote for hoping that when (since it really has always been when, not if) they do this, they provide some potential for homebrew apps on it.

Sounds pretty interesting, I read about this yesterday on newsvine and did some research on it. I still don’t think it will not happen. You can read my post about why I think that here.

Oh, please tell me this will not happen, I just got my iPod video yesterday!

Just what I have been waiting for. I think this is really the next step in what all media devices will be.

Although I’m not an iPod fan, we just dumped a DTM race onto one for our client, Mercedes-AMG and it was pretty flippin nice! It went from my Tivo > DVD > rip > iPod.

Apple seems to be a bit behind on this as “others” have come out and now Toshiba has the Windows portable MC which is very nice (not to start a MS vs Apple) and will synch with the MCE.

We are really looking at a larger screen over the iPod video. I love OSD screens but I am not a fan of touch screen UI on top of the area your about to watch. Apple already has issue with fingerprints all over their pods. ;)

When I was researching camcorders, Sony had this option on the LCD. It was awful! If Apple releases a pen, like Palms, it would be a bit better.

Anyways, I really like the overall look and future of this. I’ve played with Creative’s option and it was very slick. I’m excited for Toshiba’s and their Gigabeat stuff rocks!

Do you remember those pictures from the patent applications where the user was using two fingers at once to do various tasks? Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp-y3ZNaCqs

I was just at the Apple store today, and I tried out the new iPods (the 30 and 60GB video iPods) and they are pretty awesome. I didn’t realize how sleek and nice they look. It even seems as if they have lowered the weight on those. This new iPod would definitely blow the previous iPods out of the water though.

My mate dropped mine and now it’s got a dent in it. So now I’ve got a reason to upgrade.

Excellent idea for the next iPod, but is anyone else worrying about the screen scratching? They should implement a sliding screen cover or similar, thats if Apple has anything that looks remotely like this planned.

You people are lame. Wide screen display and touchscreen controls…? while we are at it, lets throw in a couple more “improvements”.

1. Intergrated cell phone support. why would apple continue to partner up with motorola (rokr and slvr have iTunes support) when they could dominate the world by themselves? you could use the click wheel as a rotary phone… Might as well make it a cameraphone while we are at it. You can customize all contacts to specific playlists, so would never have to download ringtones again (except the ones you steal illegally with LimeWire).

2. PDA intergration. A mobile version of OSX, that way you can Photoshop all your photos you took with the cameraphone. As a film maker, I always hate it when i am on the road, and i get inspiration, but i don’t have FinalCut Pro while i am driving down the interstate… Having a version of OSX would mean a WiFi compatable version of Safari (if you are on a PC and don’t know what Safari is, just think about accessing porn while waiting in line at McDonalds…), Microsoft Office (again the big touchscreen working like a keyboard), and a broadband internet connection (probably going through your cell company).

3. Replacable batteries. On my 5G, i can get between 60-120min of straight video. EVERYONE knows King Kong is too long (bad choice for the mock-up, guys), but it would be impossible to actually watch a whole movie on the larger screen with touch navigation… unless they could switch the battery. Apple should ship at least a 12hr video battery in the box, but have available a 18hr upgrade… (that way i might get through King Kong).

4. HD quailty video. Options for downloaded video from iTunes or a rental service from Blockbuster or NetFlix or something… i want to see the same details you could see on a 56″ bigscreen. I also can’t go without SportCenter 14 times a day, so it should also have a built in TV tuner with TiVo-like recording options. This will take up a lot of space, so i’d say we better make it a 200gb harddrive…

5. Appliance controls. Why find the TV remote or garage door opener? Make the iPod do it! teaming up with Microsoft, the can add a xbox360 controller feature (but they would probably charge too much, that puck Bill Gates!)… I want an alert sent to me worldwide that my whites are ready to be pulled out of the dryer! If it could walk the dog every morning, too, that would be great…

So come on, Apple. The people have spoken (and did a mediocre Photoshop job) and we NEED these things included in the 6G iPod. You better not raise the price, either… I mean, you just sold a billion songs, why would would you make me pay any more than $400 for a new iPod…

Good Idea, but the screen has got to be more resistant to scratches if you want to make touch screens. A good idea would be to get the click wheel to slide out of the ipod like the mobile phones. it would make the ipod a little bigger, but it would get you a bigger screen.

Longer battery life needed, and scratch and fingerprint issues has to be solved.

You know, I have an Idea that no one has brought up. Now…..this may seem kinda unorthodox….and might be somewhat……hard to get used to……but…..imagine an ipod similar in size to those in production….one entire side would be a screen…..and you put the click wheel on the back….it makes sense if you think about it…..most of you are or have been gamers i bet……think about it……when you play 1st player shooters (especially for those of you who were N64′ers like me and lover Goldeneye) where would you rather have the trigger button……on top or on the back?? ……….once you get used to it, it would be a simple matter of holding the ipod while using your middle or index finger to navigate……thats almost the same as we all do now only that you’ll switch fingers……you’ll still have that easy one-handed access………..idk i love this idea.
and also they ought to manufacture sheets of clear screen protectors….kinda like they do with the psp

Lets face it any new ipod is never going to be an improvement unless they address the real problems ipods have been having latley.did they improve the plastic so it does not scratch so easily, come on if you are going to have a touch screen this is really important. Did they
improve the screen colour depth, creative’s vision m has a 265000 colour screen while the present ipods have only 65000 colours.did they improve the battery life , 2 hours really is unacceptable, creative has a 4.5 hour batterylife for video.did itunes remove the spyware from thier software as they supposedly promised.did they improve the sound quality, ipods have a S/N ratio of only 82 Db.Other players on the market average ratio of 90 Db or above(any thing above 90 is considered acceptable digital quality.People should do thier research before buying thier DA player, but they don’t.they just want the ipod fashion statement.

yea, the guy that is linked to with all the specs on the new ipod posted it in febuary and said it wud probably be comin out in april. also, he said that it wouldnt be smart to buy one then. well its a few days from september, and no new ipod, so if anyone listend to him, there probably getting pretty mad that they didnt buy an ipod. btw, do what i do, when a knew ipod comes out, brake ur last gen ipod, send it into apple (if its coverd under the 1st year of waranty)and they will send u a brand new one. sell that one, and use the money with a little extra to buy the new gen. i have done that twice so far.

Wouldn’t this scratch or smudge the screen? Anyways,Microsoft is releasing their own “Ipods” soon…Its called Zune and would have wireless capability. Hope Apple would release their new ones sooner…..

Hi,
I don’t know if these are really because those pictures can be very easily photoshoped. I was able to make a very similar picture using a picture of an Ipod 5g.
But still if this is the next Ipod, man will it be great!!

It looks like a great design with no practicality. Breaking the LCD screen is one of the most common problems with these iPods. To create a case that would protect a touch screen seems improbable and pointless.

I believe this will be the next iPod. Due to the fact that the iPhone is the more advanced model of the 7th Generation. The only problem would be the battery, in my opinion
