The iPhone, by Linksys

December 18, 2006 · 7 comments

Cisco announced a new line of VoIP iPhones sold under their Linksys division. Yup, they’re stepping on Apple’s toes a bit but rightfully so as Cisco has owned the iPhone trademark for a while now. Apple fans have been awaiting an Apple “iPhone” of sorts for a long time but it seems like Linksys was able to deliver before they could. This leads me to conclude that when Apple releases their phone it will have a cheesy name like MacPhone.

Ew, I hope not. MacPhone would be better suited for a VoIP phone for Macs than a cell phone.

Well I see your point. I never thought they would actually change Powerbook to Macbook Pro. We never know..

After reading an article recently on Think Secret and I quote:
“think of the device as an iPod with phone capabilities, rather than a phone with iPod functionality”.
With this in mind one possible name for the device could be The iPod Chat.

Even if Apple does name it something cheesy like the “MacPhone” it will probably still sell fairly well. All you need to do is look at sales of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. I’ve never liked those names, but that didn’t stop me from buying one.

The only risk I see with Apple calling it the ‘MacPhone’ is that it would lower the brand recognizability of the phone because perspective buyers (who aren’t already dedicated Apple customers) wouldn’t really see the tie-in with Apple’s iPod. For that reason, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple just called it the “iPod Phone” or something like that. Perhaps “iPod Mobile” could work too.

Jonathan,

Or “iMobile”, probably the best pick.
