I will suggest also using http://www.monitis.com, compared to all of the above mentioned services you can use it both for internal and external monitoring, so you will have all-in-one pretty cool dashboard.

I also use Montastic on some of my sites. It’s free, but the quality has so far been quastionable. I have been editing and browsing my own site and at the same time had warnings from Montastic saying that it’s offline. I’m not sure why that would happen. I would not trust just one of these services, but try out a couple of different ones.

Like Justin, I am using a free application: HostTracker. It doesn't seem as feature-rich as Pingdom, but it sends out reports on a regular basis (you specify daily/weekly/monthly) and sends me email if there are any outages. Unlike Justin's tracker, you *can* specify the interval. :)

Worth noting that at present they’re offering 70% discount on a full years subscription, providing you signup at the time you take the 30 day free trial. I've been using Montastic for a while now and it's free. Not as feature-rich as others (no graphs and it checks at a non-configurable 15-minute interval), but it sends me an email if something is fishy and that's all I want.
