Update: I have written a third article for this series. You can find it here.
After my first Azureus article received lots of popularity, I decided to write a follow up article. Several people have contacted me, expressing their interest in a simple guide they can follow to optimize Azureus further and increase functionality via plugins. Today I will cover changing the incoming TCP listen port, the SafePeer plugin and the RSS Import plugin.
First off, I am going to show you how to change the incoming TCP listen port. It has come to my knowledge that some ISP’s or universities throttle traffic on ports, such as 6881, commonly used for filesharing protocols. By default, port 6881 is set in Azureus as the incoming TCP listen port, through which the torrent data will be sent. After you’ve opened up Azureus, make your way to the preferences pane, then connection. The first box will be Incoming TCP listen port and should already have a value of 6881. You will want to change that value to any unassigned port in IANA’s port assignments or any port from 49152-65535. For the purpose of this article, we will use port 49155. Enter that in the box and click save. You might not feel the effects until you restart Azureus and some of your current transfers might hiccup while Azureus switches over to the new port. Remember the port number you used, it will come in handy soon.
If you are running a router, you will want to enable portforwarding so that your torrents get all the attention they need. I have a NetGear router, so I log in to the browser based setting by accessing 192.168.0.1 in a browser. The IP you need to access will vary from router to router, but you should be able to find that out, as well as the default login and password, on your manufacturer’s support website. If you don’t have much time, this list should have what you’re looking for in terms of login and password.
Once you’ve logged into your router, find the link that says Port Forwarding or something to that effect, and follow it. Click Add Custom Service or whatever your particular router calls it. Most routers I have worked with ask for the computer’s local IP, service type, the name you will call this port forward, and the port you wish to forward. For this, you need to select TCP/UDP for the service type. Using TCP and UDP is a failsafe as Azureus only uses TCP but future versions might incorporate UDP since there is a UDP enabled tracker setting in preferences. This will allow you to upgrade to future versions of Azureus and not have to go back to your router to configure port forwarding. Next, type in something for the name of the service and then the port you wish to use. Finally, enter your computer’s local IP which can be found by Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig>”IP address” in Windows or Applications>Utilities>Terminal>ifconfig en0>”inet” in OS X (this assumes you are using the ethernet adapter en0). Type this local IP into your router’s portforwarding page and make sure to click Apply.

Plugins
SafePeer
The SafePeer plugin ensures that your Azureus client does not connect to any IP’s considered to be related to government or media organizations that monitor filesharing traffic, greatly reducing your chances of getting caught for downloading something you should have purchased. Download the latest version of the SafePeer plugin and just drag the folder to the Azureus plugins folder. You can find that directory in Options>Plugins. Installation for this plugin is now complete, all you need to do is restart Azureus.

The first thing you will notice is that Azureus will appear to hang when loading. Don’t worry this is normal while the SafePeer plugin starts doing its thing.

You can see the list of what is blocked by going go Options>IP Filters.
RSS Import
The idea behind the RSS Import plugin is to automatically import an RSS feed from your favorite torrent site and, based on your filter, download the latest episode of a television show you’ve been following, etc.
Installation for RSS Import is identical to the SafePeer installation; drag and drop the RSS Import folder in to Azureus’s plugins folder. Now you have to configure it. Head over to Options>Plugins>RSS Importer and take a gander at some of the options. First, activate the plugin by checking the first box. The second field is for you to enter the RSS feed of your favorite torrent site. The third field is the most important. It sets the filter for which you want to wring your torrent feed through. For example, I entered in “top.gear.*;fifth.gear.*” for two of my favorite cars shows on BBC2 and 5 TV. The dot in “top.gear.*” means that it will allow any single character in between, such as a space or a bracket. This is crucial since different torrent creators name their files differently and as long as you have the crucial information and nothing extra, you should be set. The semicolon in between “top.gear.*” and “fifth.gear.*” separates the two entries. You can have as many entries in the filter as you want, as long as they are separated by a semicolon. If your torrent file is named with something like hdtv or any other attribute you are looking for, make sure to add that into the filter. The asterisks act as a wildcard, allowing any other characters in the torrent name. The next setting you might want to consider changing is “Recheck channels every x minutes.” It has a default value of 10 minutes, but I recommend changing it to 30 or 60 minutes as torrent sites already have enough traffic as it is, they don’t need you hitting them every 10 minutes. Click Save and restart Azureus. The next time your torrent site updates its feed, Azureus should automatically download the files you want based on your filter criteria.
Hopefully, this article was easy enough to follow. Feel free to comment or contact me if you have any questions or problems.

Nice tutorial. After reading about RSS Importer, I looked into RSS Torrents a bit more and came across this page for the RSSFeed plugin, which appears to be a bit more powerful.
Also gave a nice example of how to create RSS feeds from torrent sites which do not publish RSS feeds, for a nice mix of technology. If RSS Mfeeds.com Google search Torrents RSS Azureus plugins Torrent site != Web 2.0, I don’t what does.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/onyxfrog/2004/11/rss-torrents-in-broadcatching-how-to.html
Hmm, I’ll have to look into that. Maybe I’ll make another followup article, ;-). Good find.
Nice article!
Personally i’d highly recommend “Enable asynchronous loading” for SafePeer (set in Plugins>SafePeer) which makes it download the blocklists after it has finished loading, – waiting for a full minute or longer just when I really only wanted to quickly add a torrent can be terribly annoying ;)
Does the * in your example work? e.g. “top.gear*
I thought that the regular expression for that would be “top.gear.*”
Yes! After changing the port from 6881 to the one you suggested, I’m getting speeds of 30kbps compared to 1-2kbps for the past week. Thanks for the tutorial.
@south: I think you might be right. I’ll double check, I only started playing with RSS Import yesterday, ;-).
I have been having memory leaks with Azureus all of a sudden, had to stop using it, tried upgrading JRE, reinstalling Azureus latest, does anyone else know how to fix this problem?
Hey,
nice follow up. I especially like the SafePeer plugin. I’ll use that in conjunction with Peerguardian, and Smac, just because I’m super paranoid
Great article. I am gonna send anyone who asks me “how do I use bittorrent?” here :>)
Is there any way to check which ports are open on your network? The reason I ask is that I am behind a college firewall, and have no way to tell which ports I can use. The default port is blocked.
You mentioned the 49152-65535 range. I have not tried all of the numbers in that range, but trying the first 10 or so has yielded only “closed” ports.
Thanks
I have a question about the port forwarding: Should you also open up ports 6881-6999 as from what I understand, these ports should be open to get maximum speeds?
If you are using the default incoming TCP listen port of 6881, then opening up ports 6881-6999 would help. But in the context of this article, we changed the port so that shouldn’t have any effect.
Also I thought that you can only use 1 torrent per port?
Thanks for your help.
Nice work Paul!
The RSS Import plugin is ok but the RSS Feed Scanner is way better and offers huge advantages over the RSS Import Plugin.
To GridX:
Memory leak problem, are you using NOD32 (The AntiVirus) ? If so make sure in NOD32 that you put ‘javaw.exe’ in your exclusions list otherwise your system will come to a grinding halt quickly. Hope this helps.
this is amazingly helpful, thanks for putting it up.
I am still getting this NAT error. How do I correct it? I am new to torrents and not ALL that great with computers, so is there an easy way to get around this NAT error, because my downloads are going pretty slowly.
how long is the “hang time” on safe peer? I’ve waited about 20 minutes and still nothing.
Jayson,
SafePeer just does that (hangs forever). I ended up uninstalling it and using the new Peer Guardian 2.0. I believe they use the same block list.
http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/
Me,
YOu should check all firewall permissions for not just Azureus itself but (Java) javaw.exe. Azureus and JRE are both running and need the same port forwarding and firewall permissions for whatever port you are using. That fixed any Nat errors I was having.
Nice article Paul!!
For those that are getting NAT errors, please take a look at this article.
Ok, well it looks like everythings working fine now, thank you.
I’m a personal fan of the XML over HTTP plugin, which works with a Mac OSX dashboard widget, located here: http://www.andrewdupont.net/azureus/
Handy bugger. I can check my torrents from anywhere on campus.
Groxx: I love that plugin as well. I use the same widget, its great!
Hey Paul,
Great job on the HowTo.
I wanted to let you know that you should update this to mention that in the SafePeer options, you should also check “Enable asychronous loading”
This will prevent the loooooong pause at the begining when SafePeer is downloading the new blocklist.
@Jeff
you said that RSS Feed Scanner is better than Import, but i cant figure out how to get it to start the torrents automatically. on top of that, i cant even get Import to show up in Azureus. anyone who knows how to fix either of these would be appriciated!
nvm i got import to work :)
I am also behind a college firewall. I would like to know if there are some certain ports that I could try to get through that because since I got here it downloads between 1 b/s and 15 kb/s. most of the time it is
Hey, I’m still having a problem, now there is a chance it’s coz i’m an idiot, but I just thought I’d check. I don’t know where to find the Port Forwarding option. I to have a netgear router, DG834G. and under my advanced Settings I only get the options:
Wan Settings
Dynamic DNS
LAN IP Setup
Remote Managment
Static Routes
UPnP
So i still don’t know where to go to forward ports, Can neone help????
Thanks

make sure you dont have the java/openstream virus, its not really known and will slow your computer donw to a hault, get AVG free antivirus and do a search, the program will no be alble to delete it, but you can delete it by going to java in the control panel, then general tab, deliete files, then delete all the addon files
hi,
i have a problem with yellow smiley although my NAT/Firewall test is OK(built in).
i’m using winxp sp2 with aztech DSL305EW router/modem/wireless access point. i’ve done the port forwarding and configured the zone alarm. my adsl package is 512/256kbps now i’m getting down speed ~5 – 20kBps. however my NAT check with web based tool(shield up at https://www.grc.com) turns out negative/failed.
please help. thanks.
Hello,
I am also on a university network. Just wondering how I can find out which port is open, cause as it stands right now, Im getting nada for ul/dl speed. And of coure, the IT ppl at the uni won’t help me either..wonder why ;-). Though they did recommend that I could try a tunnel program…any thoughts anyone??!?!??!
thanks for the great article!!
Hiya,
Thanks for the great article. I am also on a university network, and havent a clue which ports are open. Surprisingly the IT ppl at the university told me to check out a Tunnel program to get around things, but they wouldn’t tell me anymore. Anyone have any thoughts??
thanks
You might wanna add that allot of routers put their port forwarding under other names such as Virtual Server or Multi-Mode Applications. The easiest way to find out is look at every tab for ‘private IP’ ‘port’ and etc.
If you are behind a router, it’s also possible that you overload it by allowing too many peer connections, resulting in reboot/sluggish performance. Thus, it’s recommended to reduce the max # of connection globally in options – transfer.
The best way to optimize download is to set upload to correct level. From my experience, the easiest way to do that is to
1) open tools- statistics,
2) set “Max upload” in options – transfer to 0
3) reduce “max upload” incremently till the upload speed stabilize at the limit
Finally, many colleges begin utilizing Packet-shapers. If they decided to block bittorent using it, you’re outta luck. Selecting random ports might work, but if they caught on. Give azureus a few days break, put another random port, and try again.
I have Azureaus 2.3.0.4 and downloaded safepeer 3.5.1 and it loads and my torrents work and all that good stuf but I have zero blocked ip’s. If I look in Plugins -> plugin update it is loaded but again no blocked ip’s and if I click on Plugins iti is not listed. Thanks.
Russ
I have installed safepeer but no blocked ip’s come up. It is installed in the menu of azureus Plugins -> plugin Update but not in the list in the Plugin drop menu and again no blocked ip’s are listed. If I configure Tor to use Az annonymously do I even want this plugin anyway?

Russ
Russ: I personally moderate every comment, so it will not show up until I do so.
Russ W,
Seens like your SafePeer is not working correctly. I would recommend uninstall/install safepeer. You can do so under Plugin – Uninstall wizard (then install wizard).
After reinstalling, restart azureus. If safepeer’s still not working, then the blocklist url may not be correct, try go to the safepeer menu in Plugin – Safepeer or Options – plugin – safepeer
Check to make sure Enable Safepeer and blocklist manager is checked, then go to the BLOCKLIST tab, check the url. The default blocklist url should be: http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/spconfig.txt
again sorry for multiple post! I just extracted the plugin to the plugin directory and not the other 3 files that went with it. I guess I got messed up when I was trying to interpret your instructions for what looks like a mac os for my pc. It works now.
ps what happed to the link for the Anonymous setup?
it seems broken to me.
Russ: Thanks for pointing that out. I had linked to the article entry on Digg, which is currently offline for a server upgrade. It’s fixed now.
Great articles Paul, I’ve been trying to make azureus work for some time now, but with your settings it is running fine now. I have download the latest plugins as well but safepeer doesn’t unzip in a folder. So I’ve created a folder named ’safepeer’ with the .jar file in it. I hope that works.
I’ve grown accustomed to using torrentreactor.net; however they’re RSS feeds only link to the torrent view page. How can I get past this and link to the .torrent file itself? Are there better RSS feeds for this?
First, thanks for this great series of articles.
I installed Safepeer, and when I go to options –> IP Filters it says its blocking 66.1% of the internet!? Doesn’t that seem a little crazy?
Just wanted to say Great Job for the articles.. it helped me a Lot configuring Azureus.. But there is still one thing that doesnt work really well.. my uploads… i am not showing no uploads… and because of that, and only downloading at 3-4 kB/s.. its just crazy… although, i am only showing 6 seed and 5 peers, myabe that the probem…
anyway.
Good work, its awesome what u did !!
The tutorial worked great, but I do get a warning telling me to open port 49155 UDP. Should I do something for this?
Hey there, I notice your guide for azureus doesn’t have any useful tips for setting up the safepeer plugin.
I have created a guide which enables people to use the safepeer plugin without using the asynchronous mode and without having to wait for it to load during startup. This ensures maximum safety.
The address for the guide is http://bunta.orcon.net.nz/safepeerguide.htm if you want to add this to your guide I think people would find it very useful. anyway let me know if you like it and want to use it or not.
My connection at school is 100 Mbps. What type of download speed can I expect?
Thanks for this great and unique article.
I want to plug this multi torrent search engine also:

My computer is set up through a home network. My dad’s computer is the main computer in the house. We dont have a router, but we do have a netgear dual speed hub ds104. the DSL modem is made by 3com,it is internal and pci.
I’m not sure why i need to forward if i dont have a router.
does anyone have any advice?
ok ok im fine with ppl callin me an idiot but why when im using dsl my azureus worx fine but nothin else(ie explorer, Msn) but if i use my dailup they work good but slow no tail bcuz im usin dailup
hi!
thanx for the intel Mr. Paul, ive had a few problems lately, i used to download at a max speed or general speed of 500kb/s…but for some reason lately for the pass week i cant get my kb/s to pass the 300 barrier..i was wondering if all the new updates from azureus could of slowed down my transfer rate…i juste tweaked my settings in azureus as you explained and ill wait for changes..thanx again
Thanks very much for the useful set-up info, which I used when getting started with Azureus. In terms of optimization, I am encountering typical download speeds of around 70-100 kbps and upload speeds of 40-70 kbps. My broadband is 8Mb, which operates at about 5Mb, enabling download rates of about 500kbps. I can obtain 500kbps when, for example, downloading software from a website, but can’t get past about 110kbps using Azureus. This situation remains unaffected by the number of simultaneous downloads and occurs with a low or high number of seeds and peers. Should I be able to obtain higher speeds, and if so, can you make any suggestions? Many thanks, Paul
NOTE I have changed the port setting as you advised and have max upload/download speeds set to zero. I tried setting the upload speed at 60 and 80, but that made no difference. Upload slots per torrent = 5, connections per torrent = 80, global connections = 400. Update data every 5 secs.
Hi Paul, thanks for the info, it has helped alot and I’m hoping you can help with a new problem I’m having. Azureus has been working good for me for over a year. I have port forwarded, turned off all firewalls and everything was going great, sometimes reaching speeds upto 300 kb/s. Now all of a sudden I only can get yellow smilies and Azureus says that I am firewalled. I have not installed ANYTHING new, I have shut everything down, the only thing that I can figure is that Azureus has updated several things lately. Is there any way I can find out what is giving the firewall? I have even done virus scan, ad scans, and spyware scans in safe mode and still I can’t find anything? I do have Norton antivirus, spyware doctor and no adware. But I have shut them down and still Azureus says I am firewalled. And I have disabled Windows xp firewall. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Great guide very informative for a newb like me did find a very good site for configureing routers http://portforward.com/ this is also listed by Pedro in your basic guide.
Cheers
So, I finally caved and accepted the updates offered every time I opened Azureus, and now the program won’t work properly. I just want to go back to before I downloaded them, but I am unsure how to go about this. If you can give me any advice I would appreciate.
this is related to your screenshot…how did you skin finder like that?! it looks for lack of a better phrasing: like sex.
I did that with safari but I haven’t been able to find anythin to do that with finder
Neil, I used the Uno theme. Google should know where to find it.
Ok, I have been trying to set this up on my mac on the recommendation of another. But I can’t get the plugins to work. I have installed Java and that seems to help a little but I am still getting no where! I need some true help. Any thoughts or ideas please drop me a line.
Thanks,
David
Nice Article and very helpful. Keep up the Good work.
I too seem to be experiencing the yellow smileys,i always have done,my downloads can vary from anything from 100kb’s to 1!Im assuming my router may be the cause of the problem ive tryed chaning my port to all those suggested and on the tests i just get “Nat error” im fairly new to all this so i wouldnt even know where to begin,i’ve read this and all the posts but i don’t know where to start,if anyone could be so kind as to give me and help or tips they would be greatfully recieved snugglemelotz@fsmail.net much appreciated
Hi
I have recently installed the new Az version and i didnt back up all my config files.
I have restarted all my completed torrents and subsequently Az says my ratio is now poor :o(.
Anyway i have a problem in that i cant get a download to start if i set max downloads to say 3 and max active torrents to say 4.
All i will get is 4 torrents in seed mode and the download wont start.
If i adjust the Max active toorents to 0 (unlimited) then of course my downloads begin.
This is NOT how it happened before.
I am thinking it is because of all the files i am seeding and that the ratio Az has them at now, so they are first priority torrents.
Should i jsut delete all these old seeders as my ration is fine on the tracker sites i go to
Or can i fix something somewhere?

oops did i double post?
does it matter if you run peerguardian or safepeer?? I’m currently using peerguardian, but the thought of having safepeer do the job for me seems intresting… although, I am worried that having azurues do the ip blocking for me via plugin might slow azurues down?? anyone have any experiance with this?? I’ll prolly just stick with pg2, but still I would like to know if anyone has noticed slow downs with safepeer verses azurues without safepeer installed.. besides the initial loading delay, of course.
It doesnt matter if you run both PG and Safe Peer together.
It doesnt slow Azureus down other than the slow startup.
Contrary to what people suggest , i would rather a slow startup than be un protected while the asynchronous loading is happening.
I rarely shut down Az anyway
im still stuck.i want to be able to connect not with people just around me. so i can download faster!
Well, to be frank, this area is hopeless for help with Azureus as all the guides are so OLD.
Seriously, you are better off looking around the Azureus Wiki here>
http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Main_Page
Most new users AZ probs come from one of three things
1. Trying to download too many files atg once.
Download ONE at a time
2. Incorrectly configured Az.
3. Incorrect Port Forwarding
So in answer to no 2:
http://infinite-source.de/az/az-calc.html
in answer to no3>
http://portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Azur/Azurindex.htm
Find your Modem/ router on that page and follow the guide.
Failing that..
The only forum i know that has excellent help with AZ and other BT or P2P is

Thanks a lot 4 the port (49155) you are recommending at the top, I felt the effects as soon as I changed it!!!
Namely, it messed up ALL my torrents, seeded or not (“Error failed to create parent directory…”, or “Data Missing”).
What is going on? Can you help me please?
I removed a torrent… after around 12mb download. I want to restart…
I tried, but Azureus restart the download ….. HELP !
I even tried Replacing all the files from my previous folder to my current download folder …. But failed.
Sorry! My (2nd)restart means… restart from the begning… and also I downloaded the torrent again(May be I shouldn’t) and using it for.
what plug ins to install so i can have download more than 1 or 2 application plsss help me
Hey thanks a lot for this. I was having an odd recurring deceleration of my bandwidth on all my torrents all of a sudden. I thought maybe the ISP was capping it or something, so I google’d and found this. I didn’t realise ISP’s actively did such things, but I changed my port to above 50000 and it worked like a charm. Thx!
I am trying to figure out how and do a filter in rss for things that don’t meet a certain criteria. For example I want 24 where it doesn’t say hr or 720p. is that possible?

hi, i’ve gone through all the tips that i’ve already implemented in my downloading. But the problem i keep experiencing is, after i’ve downloaded alot of my torrents well, on the way to completion, it keeps stop downloading at 89% or worse, 98 or 99% which seriously annoys me. I mean it downloaded thus far and just stops. If you could share some of your experienced knowledge with me on how i can overcome this continual problem and be able to continue my downloading successfully, I’D BE MOST APPRECIATIVE!
Awaiting your intellectual input,
A.Azim
I have downloaded azures but what do i download so i can put a search in and it downloads onto azures.
Hi, I’ve a ADSL router and for the port forwarding option I don’t found that item on my router configuration list, at least with that name, but IP filtering option that ask me for Inbound traffic configuration ports and source and dest IP addrs. You feel that I have to configure the incoming port on that option?
I’ll appreciate your help.
Whenever I check the “Activate RSS Import Plugin” it automatically unchecks itself within 5 seconds. No matter if I click save or not.
Sooo… what the heck? I have RSSFeed installed too, but it doesn’t seem to be working, so I was trying this.
Are the two somehow conflicting?
what client are you using? it looks alot prettier and a bit different than mine (2.5.1)
I don’t know if anyone has said this already but for me its the opposite… i have a router with NO PORT FORWARDING configured however Azureus still says OK to my port AND i get incoming connections (only happens when ports works)
But then again its great!!! I can connect without port forwarding as if i did have port forwarding..
But im confused why it’s happening
Hello i am new to the program and am wondering how to turn those smiley faces green, downloading is really slow, What can I do to fix this?
Paul,
You still offering advice on how to configure Azureus? I could sure use some help. I’m 68 years old — a newbie.
If you’re willing: I just reconfigured the prefs (on a MacBook Pro) according to your recommendations and now it seems to be working even slower. Question: How can the Seeds and Peers be such a large number and yet the Progress is 0, or infinite?
What should I be looking for to clear this up?
TIA,
Lanny
