Most running stores carry a little pouch that will hold the chip and fit into the laces. The secret is to have the chip fastened very stationary on the shoe. If is can slide around you will not get a good measurement.

I also use new balance
I just got the nike + kit and I wasn't aware I would need nike shoes
I still haven't gotten them because I don't need another pair of runners

Could it be placed under the thin padded insole under my foot most running shoes have and still work? I'd rather not buy another pair of running shoes. I just got new ones, thanks.

Does anyone know if I can use my polar watch with Nike + ? I tried this combination and it seemed to work the first time. Second run it seemed the sensor was not found by the receiver could it be the polar interference?

Any help will be appreciated

I have a nike + armband and shoe sensor - i.e. I dont use an iPod. Can anyone please tell me how to calibrate this? I found a lot of info on how to calibrate the kit using your iPod but nothing on just the armband and sensor. Help?

You can buy a great pouch to use with the Ipod/Nike+ sensor.
Marware sells it for less than 10 bucks.

What is more accurate in measuring calories burned- my polar heart rate monitor/chest strap, or my Nike plus chip. The Nike chip tells me I burn at least a hundred more calories on a 6 mile run than my Polar.

I bought the chip, but use New Balance shoes, which are perfect for me. So I sewed a little rectangular pouch, put the chip in it, and safety pinned it to the top of my shoe just under the laces toward the toe end. Works perfectly, don't need to ever take it out, can't feel it. You don't need to buy the Nike shoes, people!

The accelerometer will not work properly on a treadmill. You don't get a full swim of your leg (unless the belt is unusually long) and the treadmill does some of the work (if it is motorized). Use the treadmill for your mileage while on it and use your Nike-plus Ipod when you are out in the real world. If you keep going back and forth you will have to recalibrate every time you use it.

I just got a new Nike+ and I've had some problems with the calibration of it right out of the box. I ran about 2 miles and it thought I had only gone 0.9 miles. This was before I had attempted any calibration. The next day, I went on the treadmill to try to calibrate it. I pressed menu after I had run what the machine said was 0.25 miles which was the distance I had entered on my Nike+. However, it said that the distances did not match up and it wanted me to run it again, which I did. Again, the distances did not match up. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions?

The Nike+ works with any shoe. I just secured mine on the tongue of my running shoe under the laces using sticky Velcro. For reinforcement, I sewed a piece of elastic over it. Works great.

Overall Nike+ works well. If you already have a NANO it really is a no brainer. You dont have to buy the Nike+ shoes to use the sensor. You can attach it was mentioned on this blog. It's fairly accurate. I had a battery go bad on me in about a year of use (not heavy use). Its a good product worth the money if you have a NANO. Otherwise the total cost of everything will add up.

I was extremely interested in getting ipod plus nike shoes and the whole gettup until I read everyones comments. It just seems like too much trouble and talk to go through. After my run today I measured the distance with my car and I knew the time because of my phone so therefore I knew my distance and mile time because of it. So.....Ive changed my mind and nike will not be getting more money from me. Theres nothing better than the simple things, and I think its stupid that nike would only make it available for the nano. Ive been running with my 30gb for 5 years and have never had any issues, I either hold it or stuff it in my shorts, works fine. Sounds like a plan to increase nano and running shoes sales, something im sure apple and nike planned together, I do love my nike shox turbo though.

I'm a physician and I have to tell you it is very unlikely (as in essentially impossible) the plastic is the culprit. You didn't say what, exactly, you stress-fractured... your heel? a metatarsal? the tibia or fibula? Regardless, the place in the shoe that holds the transmitter doesn't really line up with any of the anatomic locations prone to stress fractures. The inner liner pretty well cushions the foot from any impact with the plastic and, if it didn't, by far the most likely problem would be something on the surface of the foot (a blister, callous, stone bruise, etc.). The surrounding tissues further cushion and protect the actual bones from any hardness of the plastic, the trauma of which is negligible compared to the impact with the running surface. The nature of stress fractures is repetitive overuse. They usually come from increasing your mileage too rapidly (the conventional wisdom is to advance by no more than 10% per week and to run no more often than every other day initially). If ANYthing, that may be where the Nike+ contributes to stress fractures. People enjoy running again so much that they push themselves too hard right out of the gate. Good luck!

Bob,

I wish I could have helped ypou select the shoe. Don't blame the shoe.
The 180 shouldn't be recommended if you are running more than 15 miles a week. It doesn't have Nikes Air technology in the forefoot. It also uses the Max Air unit in the heel.
I owe a runnng store and this description doesn't seem to work well for higher mileage runners or anyone of above average weight (meaning over 150 lbs., goiung on serious runners) or more mature years (over 35).
The Pegasus should do you much better if it fits you properly. Not as sexy to look at but being part of the Bowerman Series, it is one of Nikes serious runners shoes. It will have a much smoother ride and totally superior forefoot cushioning to the Plus 180.

I was running in the Nike Plus 180 and the second week into my training I suffered stress fractures in my left foot. I have never had this type of problem before. Is there any studies to identify if the plastic in the middle of the shoe that is made to hold the chip might contribute to this type of stress fracture? I purchased the new Pegasus Air that has the same space in the left shoe. I am now concerned that the plastic in the shoe will slow my recovery and may even contribute to more problems? I have been in a cast for 6 weeks because of this issue. Can you help or maybe direct me the right resource ?
