New VLC Player Supports Windows Media

December 10, 2006 · 14 comments

Mac users rejoice! Release 0.8.6 of the VideoLAN client media player supports Windows Media Video 9, Flash video as well as improved H.264 decoding. This means you won’t have to rely on Flip4MAC for your WMV needs. The updates don’t just stop there either – there’s a handy fullscreen controller similar to the one found in QuickTime. Of course, these feature additions aren’t just for Mac users, PC/*nix users can take advantage of the new updates as well.

The new VLC release plays WMV no problem.
Fullscreen Controller
VLC’s new fullscreen controller – I will be using this a lot.

The full list of changes in version 0.8.6 can be found here. Notable inclusions can be seen under the video output section… “Additional OpenGL effects (cylinder, torus, sphere, …), Experimental Direct3D 9 video output (win32). Best served on Vista.” Download VLC for your system from the VLC download page.

I wonder if the new WMV support will let me convert my videos to WMV for 360 use. Crossing my fingers it works.

Cool, so now we can remove Flip4MAC? Excellent, one more useless app to ditch.

If you have Vista….wait for the NEXT release. All you will get is a white screen. Idk what’s worst, having Vista or the lack of compatible programs.

I am trying to play a DVD w/ Windows Media Player. The DVD was recorded on my home DVD recorder. It doesn’t work & the med. player stops responding. I did get one message saying something about it not supporting files w/ a .VOB file extention. The VOB. file extention is used by all DVD Recorder manufacturers (since 2001). One would think that the new Win Media Player would support playing these DVDs. Any suggestions?
