New iPod Nanos Scratchproof!

February 11, 2006 · 9 comments

It seems like Apple has listened to people with the new 1GB iPod nanos. They have a beveled edge to prevent face scratching when laid flat on its face. This is only on the 1GB nanos for now, with every other nano presumably receiving this silent update. This quiet update is similar to how Apple started including sleeves with iPods last year. No word yet on the possibility of this new design appearing on the 5th Gen iPods. I wonder how this affects aftermarket cases, such as those very tight-fitting plastic covers. You can read a new nano consumer’s testimony here. In other news, I’ve picked up the flu so I might not be posting so often this week.

The flu? No fun at all… take it easy.

The design change is interesting, though… too bad the bevel won’t stop those keys in my pocket. Thank goodness for Brasso. ;-)

Unless Apple changed the outer material, this is a pointless update. An indent isn’t going to do much at all. When you place a Nano in a pocket, the pocket will run against the nano regardless of how deep the indent is. Besides, the indent looks just plain stupid. It takes away the sleekness of the iPod.

I agree Ron. As Devin said, my keys will still demolish the surface regardless. Apple never thought that I would have keys in the same pocket as my iPod huh?

I could be wrong, but what I gather is that is a picture of a Nano with the PowerSupport Crystal film on it, showing how the new anti-scratch edge is causing it to not adhere to the iPod’s face.

The PS Crystal film uses static to stick to the iPod, so that’s why the little extrusion affects it negatively.

I wouldn’t call it “scratchproof” yet, we’re still a long way from that. Maybe “slightly less like a scratch magnet than previously”.

Not only does the Nano get scratched easily, it lacks a belt clip, too. Solving both problems is this solution by c6 Mfg. which is cheap, stylish and functional!

As usual, the articles are great, Paul – hope you feel better soon.

iLounge says it’s: “either a fraud, a manufacturing oddity in some subset of units, or something that does not exist in the brand new 1GB unit we have here”.

@Eli: Why the need for a belt clip, when it can be the belt buckle itself? ;)

@Ka-Meng: Great link – just sucks that we they don’t yet have small wireless earbuds (yes, of course you’d lose them, but that would only make them more money) – because the wire really takes away from the whole design aspect, especially of the belt buckle! Oh, and i’m not sure how comfortable wearing a big leather belt to the gym is ;)

well, as for the scratches, i think it’s good to buy the invisible shield for nanos from shieldzone. haven’t tried it, but could be good.. watch video.
