I'm a big fan of this sort of interaction model. I find myself using / for "quick search" in Firefox all the time. It drives me crazy when I switch over to Safari and it's not there. This is awesome. I feel you with the whole ctrl + space becoming second nature, I end up accidentally pressing it when I'm working on windows as well.
