[...] While we’re on this subject, a number have people have emailed me asking about that small orange in my footer and the sudden absence of the (mt) partnership badge in my header. Long story short (and many of you are already aware of this), back in October (mt) Media Temple launched a their new hosting platform, (gs) Grid-Server. It sounded like it was going to be the next big thing in hosting, but turned out to cause nothing but irritation and frustration amongst those using it. I was personally experiencing down time up to 4-5 times a day over a 6 week period. I simply couldn’t stick it out and longer and jumped ship to A Small Orange. Apparently, things are better now, but ASO has been treating me very well and I don’t see myself moving back to (mt) any time soon. [...]

So finally mediatemple is out. But looks like we back in jungle age. Media temple offer most unstable hosting plan as they say “The last hosting plan you ‘ll ever need”. Here I am sure this is my last hosting plan I will have with them.

I've been hosted at [mt] for a about a year now - I have always had good things to say about them, and the switch to Grid Server is not going to change that. Pricing (I haven't seen anyone mention it yet) starts at $20 a month for their basic package (100GB of space and 1TB "short-path" bandwidth). What's rather nice is that pre-existing users are able to get grandfathered in at their existing rates to gs-lite (same deal but half the space and bandwidth).

Well I have been a fan of @Mail for some time (Used it on DC-Hosting) and I guess I was just hoping for something in your style, and to hear that you are doing that, I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but @Mail is a great mail application and i'm fine with waiting! All good things come to those who wait etc ;)

Thanks, and great work with the Grid Server, so far all seems great.

regarding @mail. Yes we are building our own interface. Getting feedback now from @mail so we can do what we set out to do with the mail app. We decided to launch without the new mail interface...Didn't want it to hold us up.

Regarding Stella's post: Root access is not something we'll be offering now on the (gs) Grid-Server. The (dv) Dedicated-Virtual servers are made expressly for that. Concerning the price point, some of the other virtual plans out there are cheaper but they're probably not offering the level of power and equipment that we do. It really depends on what you need.

We will be upgrading the (dv)'s soon. you can read about it here: http://mediatemple.net/company/whats_new/

Cheers!

This Grid Server thing, is same as the shared plan! You can not edit the httpd.conf! You can NOT have virutal host! you can not have your own subdomain to be masked!

Mediatemplate virtual dedicate server, yes you can do that and start from 70 USD with PHP performance, many other companies offer much better dial on the virtual deciated server.

So if you want to edit the httpd.conf, forget about the Grid Server plan on the Mediatemplate.

RE: http://static.julianbh.com/screenshots/ps/mt/ajax.png

I hope thats not the webmail interface of what they have built because thats @mail (www.atmail.com) and I was hoping they had built their own.

Hopefully I misunderstood :)

Otherwise, the new specifications and features are looking very attractive for us MT customers :)

Ryan:
This is a screenshot of the "Simple - Ajax" new webmail. There are actually four flavors: "Simple - Ajax", "Simple - Any Browser", "Advanced - IE6+", and "Advanced - Mozilla".
I'll get screenshots of the rest up tomorrow.

Ryan, the rumour is that it's <a href="http://atmail.com/" rel="nofollow">@Mail</a>, which <a href="http://www.netnation.com/" rel="nofollow">NetNation</a> also uses. If this is true, and MT has not done much customization, @Mail is reasonably good, but nothing to get really excited about. It seems to work best in IE 6+, but is lackluster in Firefox and Safari. Pretty bare bones, except the bloated interface.

Man. Thank God it's finally coming.

I used to speculate an age ago about how a grid type system could revolutionise shared hosting and what it can handle; thank God I chose the host that decided to have the balls and resources to implement it!

Since the grid server evidently evolved from shared server 6.0 (a free upgrade for current shared server customers), I assume it's a complete replacement. I imagine the logistics with such a change for so many customers are immense, so I'm not too surprised it took them so long.

OK, I've got some more info. We're not allowed to share prices, but I know that this is going to completely replace the (ss). There will be no more (ss).

For more details, see an entry on my blog, at http://tcmb.deathaxe.net/blog/

This is all speculation, but I think that the (gs) IS going to be (ss) 6.0.

All the features on the ss6 page (http://www.mediatemple.net/services/webhosting/ss/linux-standard/ss6_sneak_peek/index.php) are the same as the features of the (gs), and it says that ss6 is in beta as of June 27th, which is around the same time the (gs) beta started (I can't remember exactly when it was).

One sad thing though. These may be false numbers listed, but the prices I see on the (gs) beta page say it'll be much higher than the (ss). I'm not sure if we're allowed to share that info or what, so I'm not going to risk anything.

Any idea if this will have 'true' multi-site capabilities, I signed up for an account a few months ago but had to cancel as they didn't have this feature which would have gave me email headaches. If this is the case I might just have to give it another whirl. Thanks for the review.
