.Mac Webmail Now Online

October 27, 2006 · 9 comments

Apple’s new .Mac webmail has gone live. The new .Mac webmail rollout features AJAX technology including drag-and-drop functionality as well as a familiar Mail.app interface. It also utilizes IMAP instead of POP3 so everything is left on the server regardless of what computer you check your mail on. I suggest signing up for a .Mac trial to give it a test drive. Don’t forget to check out the nifty quick reply feature (select a message and click the little arrow on the right). However, I think I will be sticking to my beloved gmail.

Nice addition to .Mac, makes my subscription a little more worth it.

Paul – With Gmail do you use a third party app to view your email or do you use the web access? Just curious. When i first started using gmail I would access it via the web, now I use Thunderbird to view it. Not quite sure which way I like best.

Also, are you still using gmail for your domain service and how do you like using it?

Allyn, I use the web interface for gmail. I have so many filters and labels setup that I can only keep track of things like that. I’ve got the hosted gmail thing too but I never use that.

Would you guys say it was a bit pointless to sign up for a .mac account if I don’t actually own a mac?

@Paul: Is there any reason why you use a standard gmail account rather than your specialised hosted gmail?
Isn’t me@paulstamatiou.com much better than paulstamatiou@gmail.com?

What happens when my server is down for some reason or another.. don’t want to miss any emails. Basically, I just thought it was too much trouble and @paulstamatiou.com is longer than @gmail.com, especially when giving ppl my email address over the phone or at the Apple store giving them my email addy to send a receipt to, etc.

But most importantly, I’ve had my gmail account since early 2004 and switching email addy’s now/using another is too much of a hassle.

OK fair enough :)
Does anyone know if it’s possible just to buy the .mac email account without all the other services? And if so, how much is it?

@ Jeff: I had a .Mac account for 2 years before I had a Mac. IMAP is nice :)

Looks nice, but i prefer Gmail.

Paul, did you notice that Apple released a software update for the shutdown Macbook issues? I always knew it was a software problem and not a hardware one. Finally my Macbook is fixed. :)
