iLounge Reviews the New iPod Nano

September 14, 2006 · 27 comments

iLounge was quick to snatch up the newest iPod Nanos and pump out a great review. It’s probably the most comprehensive iPod review ever published, with comparison pictures from every angle, pictures of the new software features as well as Nano accessories. The verdict: they love everything about the new Nano and have confidence that it is fairly scratch-resistant. If you still worry about scratches, a new Invisible Shield for the Nano should be in stock this Friday.

Update: It seems like iLounge has been busy; they also reviewed the new iPod with video (the so-called 5.5G iPod).

Paul i have a question. Why in the article it says “Transfer times for data have doubled from prior nano.”?

And Could you give me your honest opinion on how you like the new nano. I think the old nano looked a lot better.

The only real component-related step down we noticed in was in transfer speeds. Apple last year shifted iPods entirely to the highly common, PC-friendly USB 2.0 standard for data transfers, and the original iPod nano was pretty fast at transferring music, photos, and other data from computer to flash memory. In a direct comparison between current and past 4GB iPod nanos, however, we discovered that the new nano transfers at around one-half the speed of its predecessor: it took 4 minutes and 35 seconds for the old nano to transfer a 2.58GB file – incidentally, a full DVD image of Windows Vista – while the new one took 9 minutes and 15 seconds for the same file. Average users can expect that nano music library refreshes will take longer than before – not much of a problem if you fill your nano once and use it for a while, but a possible inconvenience if you repeatedly deplete and then re-fill the nano all the time.

As for my opinion, I think it looks better than the old nano going back to the retro iPod Mini styling that was oh-so-popular. The new design also sports added functionality in the way the entire nano body is more scratch-resistant which was a huge problem with the first gen nano. I myself fancy a green one but I can’t justify the cost right now considering I already have a nano. I think that they could have changed it a bit more though… it’s 95% the same nano, but in a new case.

Yeah right, bringing back the mini design was a big mistake, I like the old nano style way better. A few people I’ve talked to agree, anyone else want to weigh in?

I think 8gb scratch resistant versions of the old design would be great, too bad Apple is sucking it up big time on the new Nano’s as far as I’m concerned.

Edwin, Paul loves everything made by Apple and Yahoo, didn’t you know that? Ha ha ha ha…

Andrew, I ask all my friends and they said they didn’t like the new design. The old nano was modern and very cool, these new nanos are like going back in time. They are not that cool and look just weird. Apple is a very good company and innovative, thats why i think they could of done a much better design then this.

I’ve got to be honest. I believe it looks really awful… I really just don’t like the look and I assume it’s still tied to the awful program which is iTunes. I really want to like it. I actually had a Shuffle and an iPod Video. They just don’t work the way I imagined…. I’ll stick with my Creative.

I totally agree, they still look alright, since they are so small, but the mini rounded egdes are just “gay” I think. Couple that with the slower transfer speed and this is a big step backwards. (…goes out to pick up a 4gb “old” Nano…)

hey i for one just go ta new 8giga and its pretty sweet.
the matt black aluminum has a nice stealth feel and
its alot less glossy or jewlery like compared to the other nano.
im really pleased with the new desighn because i had also felt
that the two peice plastic/chrome stuff just looked cheap anyway.
decide for yourself but i think the black model has a great
real tech feel to it almost like a stereo amp.

Come on! These are cosmetically beautiful – never seen colours or packaging like this. All nanos have been lovely but you really need to have one of each. I wish they had made all models at the same 8 gigs. Why must we have robotic COOL black as the top of the range? can’t we have the choice? Was it the black nano that sold best. And what was the U2 black all about? Nice with the coloured track wheel but ruined with those alwful signatures on the back. get one of those and everyone things you are a U” fan. urghh!
These new ones RECORD. That is fantastic. beautiful and usable. The best so far.

I was given an IPOD as a gift. The new ones are underwhelming. I race slot cars, little plastic ones. They crash. They roll. They bang up something awful and they don’t scratch. Why do IPODs scratch? Till the people that buy IPODs stop buying IPODs they will get what they deserve, overpriced, under engineered mediocrity. This is not life it is electronics and plastic.

guys, i just love the old nano ! in general they r not SO great gadgets and i admit i just bought one just for the looks but the new one is..yuk!
i nevere really liked the mini and those colours are a bit too much! dont forget apple made a fashion with a plain all white player to start with.

the only thing that concerns me is battery life, on apple’s site it says 24hrs wich i know is not so true but is it more than the old nanos ? the one i have needs charging every other day with moderate use (say 6 hrs a day, mostly radio, not mp3s).
i was happy to read that the new ones r slower though ! it put that evil grin on my face again !! >:->

to conclude:…. old nanos ROCK !

oh ! one more thing: ESOX:…..ur almost right ! they scratchproof thing is a pain. they CAN make them scatchproof but they wont ! lets not forget it took them all these years from ipod G1 to give them a radio tuner ! AT AN EXTRA COST ! i tell u when they make a scratchproof model it will be more expensive ! its a love-hate relationship with apple!..

i love the old ipod nanos! i have a choice of either buying the old or new.. the cheapest 4GB old style i’ve found is only 105 quid!! n the 4GB new ones, which do look awfully childish with its multiple BRIGHT colours… is 130!(4GB)

Personally i’d go for the old style!!!
Cheaper, better looking and faster transfer rates!!

wow, you guys are all idiots. the new nano is the shit. and Transfer rates are not half the speed of the old nano. i just added all my songs to my new nano and it went damn fast. I have an old nano, but i just had to have the new nano because i loved the way it looked and having an MP3 playing that small and being 8gb is rediculous. i absolutely love it, and for all of you that say the old nano is better, you deserve to choke and die.

My 4G just died the other day, so I had to replace it. I’ve gotta say, I agree that the previous nano looked nicer – BUT – compared to the 4G all of the new features are simply awesome. I’m glad I upgraded.

Why does the 8GB only come in black, anyway? I would have preferred Silver and 16GB, but.. *sigh* I had no choice but to cram 14GB of media from my broken 4G onto the nano.

Apple – are you listening?

i was given the new ipod nano for christmas and a first i was dissapointed as id been saving up for the 30gb video. after a while i took it out the box and realised that it was actually pretty good its alot less money to worry about and compared to 7,500 songs 1000 dosent sound alot but it is

how ever if i went out to but an mp3 for around 120 quid i would get the sony walkman (not the small thin ones but the smaller of the bigger ones)

Ok,… Im wanting to buy a nano next month,… What is the difference between the new and old one besides the look, (I like the old one) and size (I dont want anything bigger than a 4GB) … also,.. will the XtremeMac Airplay Boost for 2nd Generation work for the first generation? … does the 1st generation have a radio tuner?

i agree with everyone on the look of the new ipod nano, i just dont think its as nice as the others.

i recently bought an ipod nano like 2 months ago and im already on
my third.

somehow my two last ones turn off, charged, and wouldnt turn back on
at all. same problem happened twice.
i took good care of my ipod, no scratches no nothing.
it would just turn off and wouldnt turn back on at all.
they just keep throwing me new ipods, but what happens when my
warranty’s up?!?! it seems like everything is getting crappier these days.
everyones trying soo hard at making their things smaller and nice when
the inside is actually crapp and doesnt work as well.
