Wow, Paul - this kicks ass! I fiddle around with photography here and there, and this is giving me lots of cool ideas to play with (in my copious spare time - lol).

Good seeing you last night at Ignite ATL ...

Cheers.

Hey Zeeshan - that was actually from 21 megapixel DSLR camera, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I'm not sure what lens he had on it though. It shoots pretty good HD video, that's for sure!

Yeah I agreed, these posts are more along the lines of how to do HDR, not how to be good at it... mainly because I'm still learning myself! I'll likely post a follow up when I master the art. :-)

Thanks for this series of posts, they've been really interesting and helpful.. I've started making HDRs with my Canon Ixus P&S and it's looking good so far.. I had no idea CHDK existed until your post mentioned it

what I would like to see is a fourth post detailing what effect the different options in Photomatix do, how they affect the image and so on.. how to get desired effects, how to avoid undesired ones (I had no idea halos were frowned upon, I love them!!), that kinda stuff..

maybe a "Making *good* HDR photos" article as a conclusion to the series? You explain what it is, how to shoot, how to create.. all that's missing is an explanation on how to make it not suck :D

or, if not a post here, then an addendum with recommended further reading

Cool How To, Paul!

Just one question: Can you tell me the title of the music used in the video? It sounds quite good and seems to be perfect for a school video that I have to do in the next days...

Greetings from Germany! I always enjoy reading your Blog!

I have to say.. Thank you!! You did a good job explaining about HDR. I have no idea what it is at first until i bumped into your blog. And I'll definitely try that Photomatix Pro. I've been using CS and I think this is better and more simplier. Thanks!

Ooh, good call on penultimate... I guess my mind wants to believe that your HDR series of posts will continue for one final tune (i.e. an ultimate post sometime in the future)!

Great series, Paul! I'm not a huge fan of HDR myself, mostly because it's been so overused in the last few years. Take a look at the Flickr Explore for any given day and odds are at least 25% of those will be HDR.
It really is a taste preference, but when done correctly, it can really bring out the best of a photo. I really like the shot that Eugene took with the Fiesta pointing into the sunset. That's a really solid example of what HDR should do. Some less experienced people have major problems with ghosting and halos (like the Fattal map you posted above) which really gives HDR a bad name.
Anyway, all that is to day that HDR can be really cool when used correctly and in moderation and this series is great for people just getting started! Thanks :)

Way to break out the SAT words, but penultimate means second to last hehe. ;-)

Thanks for the comment and for helping out that day! Yeah I'm not fond of the halo effect either, just kinda happened with that particular tone-map operator when I tried to make it a bit darker and contrasty.

This is a great penultimate post on HDR photography, Paul. It's very cool that you looked into so many other applications outside of Photomatix Pro.

One aesthetic issue (some may call it a technical issue) that may come up in tone-mapping the HDR images is the halo effect. In the screenshot of the "Fattal" operator tone-map in qtpfsgui, this halo effect is clearly visible around the buildings. In general, seeing halos in the resulting HDR image is considered a flaw by many photographers (I take this stance as well), though there are times where the effect may enhance the overall image.

Thanks again for the credit to the Fiesta HDR images and the link to my photoblog.
