Google Talk Update – Easy File Sharing

August 16, 2006 · 17 comments

Google has updated their homemade instant messaging client, Google Talk, today. The most important feature addition is what I’d like to call smart file sharing. You can drag-and-drop files or folders to share with contacts. For example, if you wanted to share a large picture with someone you can drag it into the chat window and it will send them a small preview. If they want to save the full-size of the picture, they can then click download originals.

It’s also important to note that the new GTalk executes file transfers with a direct connection to your contact’s computer whenever possible; leaving latency at a minimum. Other additions include voicemail which is great for leaving a message to an offline colleague. Download the latest version for your PC.

I will probably abuse the Send Voicemail feature more than the file sharing feature.

Installed..

Shame that you can only send files to other Gtalk users, email remains as the only way to send simple files to people on other programs.

The way that people are split between the 4 main IM programs makes anything but talk painful to do with your whole contact list because MSN, Yahoo, AIM and google refuse to all talk to each other.

That’s actually a pretty cool feature. I haven’t really messed with Google Talk at all as no one I interact with uses it — am I missing out?

Very few users communicate using Google Talk. So no, nothing really that non-Google Talk users are missing out from. That is unless you care for chat logging directly to your Gmail account.

iChat and Trillian on Mac and PC respectively are the clients I prefer. I wonder where Derek is getting those figures. Oh wait, he didn’t present any figures. And no one uses Gmail, so I guess no one uses Google Talk through the AJAX interface either.
