Flickr Update: Change Photo Layout

March 13, 2007 · 19 comments

I just noticed that flickr added a minor tweak just now. You can change the layout of your photos page. There are some small design changes as well but the Flickr logo still bears the gamma tag. To change your flickr photo page’s layout, head over to flickr.com/account/prefs/layout/ and select one of 6 layouts. Just another example that small changes can do a lot. You can replace the sidebar of sets with collections – does anyone know what the difference between a set and a collection is?

Which layout will you be using?

PaulStamatiou.com runs on the Thesis Theme for WordPress

Thesis is the search engine optimized WordPress theme of choice for serious online publishers. If you’re a blogger who doesn’t understand a lot of PHP, Thesis will give a ton of functionality without having to alter any code. For the advanced, Thesis has incredible customization possibilities via Thesis hooks.

With so many design options, you can use the template over and over and never have it look like the same site. The theme is robust and flexible enough not only to accommodate a site like PaulStamatiou.com, but also to enable the site to run far more efficiently than it ever has before.

Collections are like containers for sets, a type of hierarchial filing system for your photos.

Personally I’m sticking with the standard layout.

This is awesome, I haven’t been on since the changes happened. And I am excited to hear about this $100 l-top. When should we expect this?

I’ll be sticking with the default, because it’s what I’m used to and it’s what’s easiest for me to work with.

It’s funny because I was going to blog about how Flickr has not been adding new features…

In addition to this they have also made it possible to be emailed when someone comments on your pictures. I don’t think this was an option before, but I could be very wrong about this.

Interesting timing with Zooomr down prior to a big new version. Not much of a spoiler from Flickr though.

I always thought that sets should be able to contain other sets. And now, it seems, they can! Hurray!

Are collections new? I thought they were there for a while, but they just gained some usefulness. Maybe it is new, not sure.

I actually think Flicr could be doing a lot more with their photo displaying / navigation than they are. As it is, I actually prefer viewing my photos using my vdh_flickr Txp plugin on my own site. That’s pretty sad for Flickr. Although they have more features the actual navigation could use a major overhaul IMO.

I think I was browsing flickr when the update went live. I refreshed my flickr page and was all like WTF.. I looked through the options and decided to stick with the default, but the choices are nice.

If only there was a way to do both collects, and recent sets…why do we have to choose!?

Finally!!! This may be the single reason I may just use Flickr for now on instead of Smugmug. I currently use both pay services.

Peter – This is a very small step in the right direction, I’m amazed that anyone would have such a big reaction to this. I’m more amazed that you are paying for two photo services! Actually viewing photos in Organizr is much better IMO than the default.

I think the default view is the best anyway. Played with it and then realised this. Not tried the grouping of sets as yet.
