Pretty sweet. It's a goal of mine to get one of those, I do photography more as a hobby now but I like doing local events. Oh just remember not to take pictures of the green laser with this one =P

Paul - here are a couple other cool things you should check out:

Hook the D300 to your flat screen TV via HDMI. Here's a video of me doing it.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6koBzNqbaC8

Also, if you add the MB-D10 battery pack and throw in AA batteries, you can shoot at 8fps. It's pretty unreal.

Awesome review! Thanks for the video, as well. Although I think the D300 is cool, I'm with the others who've commented that I like the size, simplicity and power of my D40. It takes phenomenal shots and didn't break my wallet.

Nice review Paul. Like a few of the other comments I don't know if I would consider an $1,800 camera body a middle of the road consumer toy. This is a pretty serious unit. The FPS is sick. With that said, I shoot most of the time in M mode. The lower ISO limit of only 200 on the D300 makes me just want to hold on to my D80 for now.

My D300 should be here this Friday, I'm pretty excited. I've been using a D70s as my main camera for several years now, it'll be nice to finally retire it for something new. Thanks for your thoughts on the D300 Paul, weird coincidence that your post on it came right after my plunge to order one. I would love a D700, but from what I've read, you might as well get a D3 if you are dropping that kind of cash... one could only dream.

I figured something like this was brewing in your wordpress drafts after seeing the shots show up in your flickr a few days ago...

Side note, my last image on the D70s made number one one Flickr Explore last week. I can retire it happily now. :-)

I think I'll stick with my D40 for now. Its compact and not too heavy to lug around.

Just like what Ken Rockwell mentioned, unless you are a professional photographer the D40 can achieve 95% of the shots you want with the D300. It properly better to spend more time composing a better picture than having to figure out how the camera works.

Paul,

You refer yourself as a casual photographer but for less than a year you have shot with a D40 D80 and now D300. Not so bad at all.
I have my D80 and will upgrade to D700 when it comes out

The D300 surely is a camera for PROS. The lenses are really impresive, no doubt it shoots wonderfull pictures.

Great post! I'd love if you did a Canon review!

One mistake though:

"That way you’ll be able to afford replacing it the obsolete body every 3 years."
