It wasn’t long ago that I was talking with my roommate about how it was only a matter of time before someone was able to get the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 working with an ordinary PC. Well that day was today and surprisingly it was my friend Dan at UNEASYsilence that was able to pull it off. All it took was finding it right Windows drivers and an HD-DVD compatible DVD player application. The HD-DVD add-on will run you $199 compared to set top HD-DVD boxes that cost $500 and up.

Toshiba is coming out with a (approx) $250-$299 HD DVD next month, AFAIK.
Can someone explain something to me:
Is watching an HD (either format) DVD on a PC even comperable to watching it on an HDTV?
Kyle, if you have a PC monitor capable of at least 1920×1080 (something like that) resolution (generally your 23 and 24-inch displays) then yes, watching an HD-DVD on your computer will be similar to watching an HD-DVD on an HDTV.
Got ya. Thanks, Paul. I just couldn’t understand the breakthrough entirely unless something smaller than the 24″ monitors was actually similar to an HDTV. I’d be willing to bet a 24″ display is less than an HDTV at 24″ though.
I would imagine it would even look better where the computer screen’s natural resolution is 1920×1080 since monitors are usually far higher quality.
But then again if you have an HD TV with the same resolution, it will likely have better brightness, contrast ratio and viewing angle than your PC display.
That is indeed true.
I managed to purchase the last X360 HD-DVD player in my town so I’m excited to try this out. :)
