ToneMine - Compose Your Own Ringtones

Oct 09, 2007 in , ,

Tired of using sketchy sites to find mediocre ringtones to replace the default one on your new phone? ToneMine attempts to solve this problem by building a community around people who create and share their own ringtones with their mixer tool. There is a decent library of sound effects you may use to create your ringtones but the real treat is using community sounds or audio files uploaded yourself. I was quite delighted to find the CTU phone sound from the show 24.

Tone Mine

I’m not much of a composer myself but the Flash-based drag-and-drop interface for creating ringtones is simple enough to use. You’ll need to register an account (yeah, I know) to use the real features of ToneMine and save any ringtones you’ve created. A quick peek in the ToneMine Terms of Service indicates that any ringtone you have created with ToneMine is ToneMine’s property, so don’t plan on selling any of your masterpieces. However, you can share ringtones with friends:

Members of the ToneMine Community can embed their tones into their own community pages, like Facebook, send new tone notices, and upload and share with family and friends.

I have yet to make a ringtone with ToneMine as I’m quite happy with my current ring tone, the Entourage theme song, which I paid something ridiculous like $3 for. You’re probably expecting to pay some fee for this service but it is surprisingly all free. Overall, the service offers quick way to make a free and unique ringtone even if the site is obviously an advertisement of sorts for its creator, LetsTalk.com.

ToneMine is set to officially launch sometime next week.

Speaking of which, what’s your current ringtone?

  1. My current ringtone = Wii Sports Theme. It rocks. BTW, are Stammy points like Schrute Bucks?

  2. Haha, close - Stammy points are much cooler than Schrute bucks but Stanley nickels are a close competitor.

  3. My current ringtone = Relax from MIKA. Very good song.

  4. My current ringtone = An Icelandic religious nut talking about how we shouldn’t invite the sin into our homes for coffee. Quite entertaining actually :)

  5. Wii Tennis - After The Match song.

  6. My ringtone is the annoying Treo ring. I work in music and technology, you would think that I could be up to date! Maybe ToneMine could help me out.

  7. I too have found that stuff from TV makes the best ringtones. My “loud” ringer is the Office theme, my quieter one is Crockett’s theme from Miami Vice, and the vibrate/ring is the CTU ringer (which I’ve had for a couple years and sounds exactly like the one on Tone Mine).

Tone Mine is an interesting service, but I don’t forsee it being very popular because, well, they sound like ringtones. It may just be my surroundings and the people I know, but the trend seems to be that people want “real” music. Not only do people like familiar music, but I think people enjoy sharing their taste audibly. Unlike the days of the transistor radio, there’s no way to broadcast your on-the-go music to the people around you in the headphones-era (unless you’re Radio Raheem). Whether based in music, film, or television, choosing a ringtone can be as much about deciding what you want others to hear when your phone rings, not just yourself. Full-audio ringtones are a way of broadcasting (or subjecting others to) your tastes.

This, of course, only stands true when a person has the ability to put custom ringtones on their phone — but Tone Mine implies the same thing. My feeling is that most people stumble upon the site through blog links like this, spend 10 minutes messing around, and come to the conclusion that they just don’t feel the effort is going to produce something worth saving. But hey, Let’s Talk couldn’t care less about that, so long as people are clicking on their ads.

  8. Mine says “Reality is the only word in the language that should always be used in quotes”. Totally freaks people out.

  9. The standard old British telephone ring. Simple but best.
I did have ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ when the office phoned, but got told off when I forgot to stick the phone on silent in a meeting.

  10. I didn’t realize ring tones were so popular. I am happy with the one that came on my Blackberry, although I use to use one I made myself using the sound effects from garage band.

  11. Current ringtone: Apple - Sonar :P

That is, until I can hack the iPhone v1.1.1 for other non iTunes ringtones.

  12. I couldn’t really figure out how to use uploaded files in the mixer. I clipped a <30 second portion of a song (Dragostea Din Te, a.k.a. Numa Numa, by O-zone) and uploaded it, but all I was able to accomplish was assigning it to one of those letter buttons, not dragging it on to the timeline.

On the other hand, I am happy ToneMine supports Boost Mobile, which is my current carrier.

  13. Sounds like an emule of ringtones. Can’t say I’m hooked, I’ve been drivin’ crazy of ringtone addicts on public transport.

  14. Wow, I didn’t realize people still use ringtones. I thought most people use mp3s of their fav. songs. Anyway, my current ringtone is Since You’ve Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson. Yes, I’m secretly a 12 year old fangirl

  15. I usually go with 24 theme as my main one, and have custom .mp3s for all my close friends/people who call often. I think that just seems like a lot of work for a ringtone, reminds me of the Nokia ringtone creator in a way!

  16. Looks cool enough for a try…. this weekend.

  17. Can’t remember the last time I heard my phone ring :-(

    Looks pretty cool though!
