How Many Hours Do You Spend Online Daily?
I came across an interesting note on 9rules asking people how much time they spent online each day. I’ve already asked you what you use as your homepage, now I’m going to ask how much time you spend online everyday. I’ll go first.
First off, my daily Internet activities are heavily dependent upon how much school work I have on that given day. Sometimes it ranges from several meetings with groups to writing papers and reading endless PDFs. I’ll assume it’s an average school day with only a few hours of work outside of classes.

Apparently I spend 10 hours a day here.
I wake up around 7:30-8am and spend 30 minutes checking email and a few sites (del.icio.us popular/hacker news/techmeme/digg). I then realize how an hour has passed and I must make haste. I don’t often take my MacBook Pro to class unless I need to follow along with a PDF in class but I do tend to check my Gmail on my BlackBerry every 10 minutes.
After classes I grab some lunch on campus or at Panera and get back to my room by noon. I spend an hour or two reading feeds and checking more sites, possibly blogging if I’m not too tired. Around this time I take a 1-2 hour nap, wake up around 3-4pm (or in some cases 10pm, which does mess up my day), stay online until around 8pm, make dinner, do homework, head to the gym for an hour, get back home and do nothing on the couch for an hour/watch HBO, then get back online around midnight and stay online until 3 to 4am. However, my online activities in the wee hours are usually limited to watching web lectures for classes and writing up blog posts like this one (it is now 3:51am).
That seems to add up to a conservative estimate of about 10 hours a day, which now that I’ve calculated it seems like a lot of time to be sitting in front of a computer. On the other side of things when I have a moderate amount of school work, I only clock in about 4 hours of Internet time. How do you fare?

I would say that I spend about 4-6 hours online per day, but most of that is for my job, so I guess that’s a valid excuse, right?
I’d say 10 to 12 hours, but it includes the time spent working on our Web apps…
This summer I spent a lot of time online. When I say a lot I mean, 12+ hours.
Some days I would get up at noon, go online until 4, take an hour or 2 break, go back online until at least 10, eat dinner (usually with my laptop) and take another hour or 2 break to go out or watch a movie/TV. I would then stay online until almost 6am most nights.
Now that school is starting, I expect to be online a lot less. I’m actually going to try the “early rising” thing this year. (i.e. Getting up at 6am to do work until 8, head to school, get back at around 4-5 depending on rugby practice, do some work, and spend the rest of my time online).
You made me realize how much time I spend on my computer. Lately I have been working on my blog and so I had to do some configurations which actually take a lot of time. I love the work, though. So I do not have a problem with that.
The only thing that I think can get dangerous is, if you spend more than 10 hours (on average) in front of a computer. You get addicted easily and I think I would lose friends and other social contacts. That would be too bad, would it?
I think that since I might get this awesome job (that will keep me busy for a while), I spend about 6 hours (max) a day on a computer — on regular days.
Well, I live online since I work online :-) Not less than 15 hours/ day.
That’s a whole lot. Anyone 24 hours a day?
A more accurate question (at least for me) would be, “How many hours are you not on the computer daily?”
Seems like all day, but on average:
- between 8am and midday writing for blogs
- 1pm to 3pm one of the sites that I run
- 6pm to 8pm my site
- 10pm onwards it varies
So that would be a probably unhealthy 9 to 10 hours a day!
lol, I broke my leg this summer so I’ve had nothing else to do but sit on the computer. probably about the 10 average. ;-)
I probably spend around 8 on average.
a whole lot less than I used to- maybe a few hours on fun stuff, a few more when I have the aforementioned miles of pdf to read…
I’ve cut back on the blogs I read- my rule is only those that are written by one person- that means lifehacker is out (huge time sink there)
I figure I’ll find out the stuff I need to know in the mac world through this site.. :)
Similar to you, Paul, my Internet days vary greatly depending on number of club meetings, etc. On an average day:
~1 hour in the morning before classes
~2-3 hours cumulatively during class throughout the day
~2-3 hours cumulatively between classes throughout the day
~3-4 after classes/between/in clubs
~4-5 or so doing HW/readings
I discounted time spent browsing/checking email on my phone.
Max of that would be 16. Min 12. Wow. I think I need to cut back a bit!
I’d say I’m somewhere around 12-16 hours/day depending on how many meetings I have or how much homework I have. That’s discounting the time I spend checking my email/browsing from my phone. Like you, I also have an issue with cutting myself off in the morning and have to rush to class :).
I currently spend around 6 hours on the net a day when im not at school. Usually just a few any other other time, it can be very addicting.
Yeah, when am I not on the computer.
I’m not on the computer when I’m:
in class,
running,
doing something at running practice that takes me away from a computer, (I’m a manager)
or,
driving.
So, probably 10+ a day.
If I’m working during the day or at uni, only about 5-6 hours. If I’m off all day, like today at least 10+. Mostly spent reading blogs, new and chatting.
Put me down for 10 to 12 hours. Yikes! But I use the computer at work all day!
I spend close to 8 hours or a little more. Basically spend most of them on a few sites. It’s a lot of hours to spend really. Nice Blogg Paul. Kudos!
I sat on my computer once. Had to get a new one.
On my work days I spend anywhere between 9 and 14.
On my weekends, 5-6.
Of course, my computers are always online so technically, I am just on standby even when I am not online.
Between work, and blogging, and reading random stuff online, I could have easily pulled in 12 hours daily. Going to lectures at school is an escape ;)
I’d say around 25 to 26 hours a day..
Uhmm well to be honest it’s more like 10+ hours.
Only being in high school, I don’t spend nearly as much time as you do on a computer, but for the amount of time that I am home and awake every night, it’s pretty long. From when I get home at about 6:30 until I get ready to go to sleep at 10:30, my computer time rounds out to approximately 4 hours, minus 15 minutes for dinner and some occasional breaks.
I spent 8 hours a day at work and another 3 hours at home working on other projects. It looks like 10+ is average in our water :o)
I’m online probably around 12 hours a day at a minimum. That accounts for the 8-10 hours I spend at work, building out sites and a couple of hours at home doing the same…
I would say I’m probably online for about 5-6 hours of personal time. That covers reading my favorite blogs and writing for my own (I’m a newbie so I’m reading as much as I can). I spend a lot of my day at work on my computer and wonder the web any free moment to stay up to date and in the know so I would add another 2-4 hours while at work as well.
great post - got me thinking too about time spent on the web. I recently decided to do a no blog tuesdays type thing were I don’t blog, check stats or even log onto my wordpress. I guess that’s one step in the right direction for me - I need to spend more time on my doctoral studies.
It was also fun seeing how the great stammy runs his day. I couldn’t make it on the amount of sleep you get though.
i spent 12 hours a day, it’s because i have to connect to the internet for all of my work.
I’d say uh…6-8 hours avg. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
I would say 5-6 hours per day but only in weekdays… (not weekends)…
at least im trying to be less (or more) time..
^_^
I think I spend 5-7 hours a day online, depending on how much homework I should really be doing.
I’ve seen your class schedule, Paul… when do you find the time to study? Srsly.
Around six hours per day broken into small bits. Man I hate email. The real question is how much time for you spend being productive while on the net.
I would guess I might be on the low end of the spectrum with 4-5 hours per day. I work all day in the world of computers, but most of them are spent offline fiddling with servers and routers and all the bits and bobs that go with them. Outside of work, and hour or two in the morning before the kids get up (if I’m not at the gym), and an hour or two in the evening.
I used to do the whole staying up till 4am and being to work by 8am thing. Somewhere along the line I got old.
I’d say 8h/day, and now more because my new notebook, where I can get quite nice speed at university and blog, browse the web everywhere.
Because of the nature of my job I would say 12 to 16 hours a day.
about 10 hours a day too. ever since ive got myself a wireless router, i am always online :)
I’m spending an average of 12-14 hours a day, is that a lot?
Yeah, probably 1 maybe 2 if I have nothing else to do. I have better things to do than waste away my life on a computer.
Well… let me see… on weekends I easily spend 12 hours online, however on school days it’s usually around 6 hours or so if I’m lucky.
P.S. The image there I’m asuming is your setup. Very very nice! Mine at the moment is this: http://leon.freyermuth.com/DSC00188.JPG
Sorry for the bad quality!
I read an interesting post my another famous blogger once, who shall remain nameless. The post was about the idea of restricting one’s available working hours every day and jamming more work into that time, therefor increasing productivity. I do the opposite. I can spend hours and hours online, if I’m not careful, arriving at the end of the day with big fat nothing done. Fun and games.
15 hours a day now that I’m off this semester at college. I am constantly building websites though.
Leave it better …. :) many ….
To increase your productivity online I suggest (again) a Firefox extension.
MeeTimer 0.21
MeeTimer monitors your time online, grouping it into activities for more meaningful statistics.
It gives you easy-to-digest information on where your time is really going (include the % of the working week you need not have spent at work), so that you can take real steps to reduce wastage.
It also discourages you from procrastination, using LinkWarn and TabWarn to make you think twice before loading a new page.
As it runs all the time, every effort has been made to make it fast & light; and it benefits greatly from Firefox’s inbuilt database for speed.
Hi!
I have a DSL connection.Thats why my pc is always online but it doesn’t mean that I’m always there!
I’m not turning my pc already for one and a half month.
I’m havin’ 1 problem ,i cannot get myself leave my pc.
Even while studying!I’m always thinking who is now online , is htere any mail in my inbox ?bla bla bla bla bla……

Total 15 hours a day i spend for online!
Do u think it is cool? or Unhealty?
PLz somebody support me or advice me somethin’!!!!!!!!!
8-10 hours doing absolutely nothing useful. I really must change….
I would say that I spend anywhere between 4-6 hours a day online, the internet and computer is a very big part of my life!
I’m on the computer for probably close to 11-12 hours. I never stay on the computer for more than 2-3 hours at a time. After a 3 hour computer session I usually get up and walk, or work out, which seems to help my energy levels.
I remember in middle/high school I used to game all day long without getting up (not healthy!)
Every now and then get up and stretch/walk/jog/exercise!
okkaayy so i thought alot about this i mean how bad can it be???
how wrong was i!!!!
on weekdays i spend up to 9 hours on the computer with about 7 hours at home and 2 in school.
however on weekends i can spend up to 10 hours straight on the computer.
i somehow still manage to keep social contact with all my mates
how i do it i do not know
