Calling All SysAdmins
In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, SysAdmin Day on July 27th of course, OpenDNS is holding a contest. The first of four challenges ends later today and they’re looking for a funny SysAdmin story. You don’t even have to use OpenDNS to win, they only ask that you are an actual System Administrator. And there are some good prizes involved too.
Every Monday in July we’ll deliver you a challenge, and every Friday we’ll announce the winner on our blog. Only SysAdmins are welcome to participate. Prizes will surely be something you consider a gift.

A picture I took of one of the Georgia Tech SysAdmins administrating/reading digg.
Speaking of SysAdmins, WorseThanFailure.com is just about the best website for reading about hilarious IT/SysAdmin related stories if you haven’t heard of it before.

For the people…
:)
Great sites. Pretty funny stories.
Pretty impressive picture Paul .
I guess the fact that I look after 4 macs and a PC on my home network doesn’t qualify me :-)
Picture remoinded me of when I ran Customer Service in the late 80′2 for ICL in the South East of England. Every IT manager I visited always wanted to show me his computer room - seen one mainframe (remember those things?) seen them all.
AND - my current study has more processing power than my college’s IT department in the early 80’s
I take care of 20 computers (windows machines) at one cultural foundation at my city, I don’t think I’m a sysAdmin, but more like a ComputerGuy :). Well, there’s one funny thing I remember. My boss once asked me that we had to find the computer with the ip 127.0.0.1, which he thought someone was trying to invade his computer with that IP. I was laughing my ass off inside, but then just explained to him that “There’s no place like 127.0.0.1″.
Haha, nice pic! I feel like the dude is watching a youtube video of a cat falling off a house in the picture… but maybe he’s hard at work keeping the tubes greased.
@Daniel, haha I have that t-shirt from ThinkGeek. People would ask what it is when I’m on campus or something and I would utter something along the lines of “it’s only a reserved, loopback IP address!”.
Nice Daniel… submit that story to sysadminday [at] opendns.com!
Oh man. I just wasted a lot of time on worsethanfailure.com hmm let’s say “invested” instead. yeah
wish i could take a picture of the machine rooms here at University of Manchester here in the UK…..blows the GT ones away :P
Unfortunately no photography is allowed.
@David - I’d like to see that. =) That picture above is only part of the room. On the left there are tons of Dell servers.
@Paul…. Dell servers *shudders* I will see if i can find anyone with a pic….though photography in the room is banned :(
Unfortunately there’s nothing funny about being a sys admin at my job. Eh…
Happy sysadmin day to me! Nobody around my office seems to notice, however, and the cards aren’t piled up on my desk. Perhaps after lunch.
