TiVo CEO is an Extreme Commuter

Jul 02, 2007 in , ,

From the that-is-pretty-damn-interesting department comes an article explaining how TiVo CEO Tom Rogers flies back and forth from California and New York every week. Rogers’ family lives in New York and his job resides in California, so he makes the 6 hour flight twice a week. And I thought my friend’s 75 minute morning commute from San Francisco to Sunnyvale was bad.

However, the rise of telecommuting has become so prominent in the last decade that long commutes to the office are slowly being phased out for certain types of jobs, such as web development and content production. How long is your commute to work?

  1. There’s that Amp’d Mobile fella that used to commute ~60 miles Newport Beach to Santa Monica in a private helicopter on the company tab. It’s little wonder the filed for bankrupcy really.

  2. Approximately 1.67 seconds. My commute consists of a roll out of bed and into my chair. Though, when I have my laptop on the end of my desk, it’s about 0.4 seconds.

All my income comes from online work.

  3. Up to Norcross. Takes about 30 minutes to get to work w/o traffic. And 45 minutes to get back to Tech in the afternoon.

  4. Hey Paul, for the last 14 months, my commute to work has been 2 hours there and 2 hours back, repeated 3-4 times a week. Care to try it for a while? :-(

  5. Mine is about 3 seconds since I work from home.

Back when I was working for The Man, my commute was about 45 minutes in to downtown Denver (mainly due to horrendous traffic).

  6. In 2005 I made 42 flights in total, 18 of which were transatlantic! In February 2006 when I got back to Spain after last trip I vowed not to travel anywhere for at least 12 months. I did 16 months then had to go back to the UK for a funeral.

Now my ‘commute’ is 8 paces along the hallway to my study, 10 if I have to walk around a sleeping Moreno :-)

  7. My commute is 10 minutes. Wake up, brush my teeth, wash my face, kiss the wifey and kiddo and off to my damp basement office. I am a freelance programmer. I used to commute for 4 hours a day to the World Trade Center, that was tough.

  8. My commute was 30 minutes about 9 months ago when I first started my new job, but thanks to urban sprawl it now averages about 45 minutes. I think it may be time to consider some new options… There’s an awfully nice opportunity beaconing me only 3-minutes away.

  9. 25 minutes normally. Once I get a house in the city it will be around 10-15.

  10. 90 mins each side through the infamous Indian (Delhi) traffic. I don’t even remember when was the last time I looked in the side view mirrors before changing the lane!

  11. I’m considering a move in the next few years that’d result in a ~45 minute commute (by light airplane) each way, flying at about 130 knots.

But right now I’m doing about 20-25 minutes by car…

  12. Just about 30 minutes by train to get to Pisa.

  13. 10 minutes… but I have it easy considering the average commute is 35-40 minutes here.

  14. I have a cousin who works as a VP at Adobe and he flies back and forth from Massachusetts to California just about every week.

  15. @Jeremy - it would be pretty neat to fly to work each day, especially if you’re the one doing the flying. ;-)

  16. Mine is only about 20 - 30 minutes each way, but still too long in my opinion. Factoring commute time into your typical shift makes a long work day. I’d love to work from home 2 to 3 days per week, and in the office a couple days a week, but unfortunately management hasn’t adopted that…

  17. I used to bus 3-4hours/day for 6 years through uni and then in the first 7 months of working (before moving to a different location for work, 6 monthly rotations in different sections).

Those who fly: ever considered the environmental impact of such regular commutes? What about driving every day? Would you continue if a Carbon Framework was implemented to more accurately reflect the costs of transport? Just a thought ;)

  18. Commuting sucks, but it can be productive. For example, I sleep on the morning commute…

Wait… No. It’s only productive on the way back :p

I usually get some good work done. But now I have the iPhone, so no work gets done.

  19. When I lived and worked in Berlin (Germany’s Capital) I drove or flew up to 4 times to Cologne (about 600 kilometers) where our second office is and most of my friends and family life. The flight took 40 minutes (about 2 hours from door to door) and by car one way took about 3 1/2 hours (no speedlimit in Germany, you know).

Now I live about 40 kilometers from Cologne and need about 20 minutes to get to work and 35 minutes to get to my university - thats a lot better on the one hand, but on the other hand Berlin was way cooler :-)

  20. Mine is about 30 minutes each way. But I try to work from home one day every week or two.

    Chris

  21. 1hr commute whether i am going the 2 miles into mancester city centre in rush hour or the 30 miles up the road to huddersfield

  22. i’m part of the lucky band :) 5 min ride on the subway, 2 min walk from home (approx. one cigarette away). i live in the center of the city, and it does make a huge difference… and because summer is beautiful in Lisbon, sometimes i even walk to work!

  23. Well, I have 2 jobs.

The first is at a restaurant that’s about a 25 - 50 minute drive away from where I live, depending on traffic, and who’s driving. ;) It’s kind of a big commute considering I usually only work 4.5 hour shifts and make minimum wage. (8 dollars an hour here in Ontario, Canada.)

My other job is at a retail outlet selling electronics, and it’s about a 15-20 minute drive away, or 45 minutes by bus, walking-time included. I hope I can keep this one when school starts again. =D

  24. My commute is roughly 8 seconds - out of bed, down the hall to the second bedroom and I’m there.

Dancin’ for the man ain’t where it’s at.

  25. Commuting is terrible! I don’t wish that on anyone! Even tho a lot of the people in the aviation industry do it! It’s nuts! They always complain about it!
