Google Docs Receives Update
I logged into my Google Docs account this evening to organize some school documents when I noticed that the Docs Home was revamped. The new structure, which I rather enjoy, makes it easy to view all of your documents as well as organize them by type, folders and collaborators. Overall, Google Docs now has a feel close to that of GMail.

While the Docs Home has seen significant changes, the actual document editing process hasn’t changed much and still lacks fundamental features, such as a ruled page layout view. However, new keyboard shortcuts have been added to Google Docs & Spreadsheets if that’s your thing.

Interesting, time to start utilizing a few web apps myself, Google Docs would be a good start.
Yeah, I’m using Google Docs quite a lot now, specially the collaboration work, so I can plan things such as trips with my girl friend of friends way easily!
I actaully reacently converted over to Google Docs and have been really pleased. Emailing and using a jump drive was such a hassle. I think the folder system works great but would like to see the use of tags.
I haven’t adopted anything like Google Docs, but I like where it is and where it’s going. I know if I did, I’d still make sure I had a real backup of my stuff on physical media.
Paul, you’re a little late. It’s been updated for a week or 2 now.
Yeah it was updated Jun26 or so but I logged into the new UI for the first time tonight and was rather impressed; figured it needed commending.
I’ve dropped MS Word for collaboration work, and use only Google Docs. When editing is throug, I export it to a next step format and do the design bit.
The collaboration tool isn’t splendid, but it works better than anything else I’ve used.
I was pleased to know that the new Google Docs and Spreadsheets is more compatible with Safari.
I’m still waiting for the PowerPoint clone. Let’s hope it will come with the next update.
Nice overview, and thanks for including the screenshots. It is helpful for those of us who haven’t really given Google Docs much of a chance (yet). It looks like they (Google) have improved it quite a bit.
I just recently started using Google Docs and love it. Just the fact that I dont have to email files or carry them on a jump drive it excellent. The one thing I would change though is to be able to tab docs. I dont know if that is possible currently.
Looking very spiffy, hopefully they will roll out some similar changes to other apps like google notes or google reader
Hm, still no support for Safari. Does anyone know when Google Docs plans to support Safari?
I’m not keen, it looks and feels very Hotmail-y
I’m not a frequent user of Google Docs, but the changes made me think abou it. The only problem I can see is the lack of offline possibilities. For those who don’t have 24/7 internet connection, this is an important factor.
I am a huge Gmail, GCal and Google Docs but didn’t notice until just now. Thanks for the heads up. Looks great. Google, gotta love ‘em!
i love the concept of google docs but struggle to se how you guys use this thing compared to a full office suite.
There are just so many more features in Word that i need like TOC and Bibs etc. How do you guys handle docs like that?
