Spring Break Begins
Georgia Tech’s Spring Break kicks off today and I’ll be flying home to Houston in a few hours. I’m most definitely ready for it to begin after this project-filled week. I was at the College of Computing from 6pm to 8am just now attempting to finish up a computer science project. Of course, it was packed as most people had projects due today.
So there’s this random old phone in the midst of one of the computer labs. Some genius discovered the phone number and throughout the entire night called the phone and then someone would become curious enough to sprint to pick it up only to hear a dial tone. (Others would no doubt claim that Neo was on the line and that they must pick it up if they value Zion.) This went on erratically, but certainly more than a dozen times during my 14 hour stay.
Wikipedia also provided comedic relief as some kids found it thoroughly funny to edit the page for our rival school, UGA. Others enjoyed watching their accounts get banned. Meanwhile, another guy took up two computers and using one, remote desktop’d into his system at home, setup a stream for his TV tuner and began watching one of the March Madness college basketball games. Finally, others would take breaks from graphing out nodes and edges for visualizing algorithms such as Minimum Spanning Tree and Max Flow by drawing random things on the Expo boards. For the college students reading this, how do your typical all-nighters go?
Enjoy your Spring Break, as I’m just finishing mine. I always thought it was odd that UGA (go Dawgs!) and Tech don’t get the same week off for break. Here at UGA, all-nighters typically involve too much alcohol and underage girls. I guess I’m the exception, as mine usually involve the computer lab, Red Bull, and procrastination.
Enjoy your Spring Break! Mine has just started too - so nice to get five weeks off. My all nighters generally start on campus in a very small room with too many people and not enough computers. I usually end up drinking at about 5 - 6am, which I usually need by about that time.
I do hate all-nighters. I mean, parts of it can be fun when you’re getting things done and break for a mess around… but in general, it throws off my sleeping pattern for way too long!
Anyway, I’m gunna go pack and get things ready to go home! Woo.
Whoaa.. you get 5 weeks off Steffan? Mine’s only 1 week, as are most in the US.
I just finished up my March break two weeks ago, so I’m a little jealous that you gets your now.
I mostly spend my all-nighters listening to podcasts and MP3s, downing as much sugar and caffeine as I can, and just trying my best to work as quickly as I can. I actually pulled an all-nighter last night right along with you. :D

I’m in the UK. My Christmas holidays are 5 weeks, my Easter holidays are 5 weeks and my Summer holiday is 3 months!
And damn, do I enjoy them.

That’s too bad. I just flew into Atlanta here.
Most of our all-nighters include a ton of coffee at the local 24 hr shops, delirious twittering, relentless IMing of each other despite the fact we are ALL right next to each other, and a few pranksters usually break out into song at one point… usually an old Madonna hit.

I’m in Australia, and I live at home. My all nighters are me, alone in my room in front of the computer with the window open (in winter, the cold air wakes you up, in summer, you need the ventilation) - and trying not to wake my family.
I remember the all nighters we used to pull for yearbook in highschool though- that was fun.
I’ve got a one week “spring”/easter break, a couple of weeks between semesters, a week in September, and 4 months at the end/beginning of the year. Semesters are only 13 weeks long- not including exams. :)

I guess, Andre. I mean… I thought that was about average for University? Clearly I was wrong!
I mean, in comparison I think I pay a lot less than American’s do for Uni too. I pay £1175 for tuition fees and then I pay for accommodation (I live in a house with three other people) which is between £2000 and £3000.
How much do you people pay for Uni?
Ah, too bad Georgia Tech kicked off their Spring Break by being knocked out of the tournament. :)

When I was at Tech and pulling all nighters, one of the first things I would do is unplug that damned phone to stop it ringing.
Lucky lucky lucky, I’ve still got school..Oh well, I get 2 weeks off in another few, frequent NZ holidays rock.
At some points I might check my e-mail or catch up with some blogs, but usually when I’m pulling an all-nighter for school I just don’t have time to take breaks… otherwise I wouldn’t be staying up all night!
