With the advent of dozens of customizable startpages from the likes of Google IG to Netvibes, Internet users have a big decision to make when it comes to setting their homepage. Long are the days of simply using Google or Yahoo! as your homepage. Some prefer news sites or Wikipedia while others indulge in a purely academic homepage with something like Ninja Words. I forgot to mention this earlier, but better late than never - Panic has updated Transmit to version 3.5.6 to combat a large vulnerability. The patched vulnerability dealt with an “exploitable heap-based buffer overflow condition“. You can download the update at the usual place.

Hellenic OS X Localization Finally Emerges (7)

Jan 29, 2007 in , ,

Mac users in Greece are well too aware of the fact that Apple does not have any localization for Greek OS X users. After a lot of work, several devoted Mac users have created a Hellenic OS X localization and are offering it for no charge. Creating a localization for an entire operating system is no small task by any means, so I’d like to commend those that helped with this project. Continue Reading »

Help Me Clean Out My Inbox (9)

Jan 29, 2007 in , ,

I frequently receive emails from developers or PR people looking to inform me and you guys about new websites, services or products. From time to time I’ll find a really interesting one and write up an entire article on it. As of recently I’ve been flooded with work (and emails) so I’ll just point you guys to these websites before I run to the College of Computing to get some homework done. Continue Reading »

I will be using Vista for an entire day and will see if I can do so without booting into OS X. I will be chronicling my experience and Continue Reading »

Stammy Script: RSS to Twitter using PHP (89)

Jan 26, 2007 in , , ,

I’ve been a Twitter user for a few weeks now and have come across many tools to help with Twitter posting and integration. I have also seen several Twitter mashups that essentially do RSS to Twitter and have become rather popular. At first it might sound stupid to use Twitter for syndication instead of tried and true RSS, but simply put, Twitter users are always aware of Twitter happenings, Continue Reading »

Jan 25, 2007 in , ,

Web design and development gurus Dan Rubin, Jonathan Snook, Bryan Veloso and Steve Smith have combined forces. They created Sidebar Creative - a powerful web development collective. Bryan tells me they’re glad to work with any size client - big or small. I like how their contact form has a slider for budget, with the default value set at $100,000.

The MacBook Pro power adapter has two modes, one for 18.5V @ 4.6A (85W) and another for 16.5V @ 3.65A (60W). It automatically senses what it’s plugged into and if it’s plugged in a MacBook it uses the 16.5V setting. I learned of Continue Reading »

WordPress 2.1 Out (33)

Jan 22, 2007 in ,

WordPress 2.1 was released earlier today and it boasts many bug fixes (over 550 strong) and an impressive new feature list. For me the most important new feature is auto save for posts with a revamped upload manager coming in a close second. Continue Reading »

Getting Started with Zudeo (9)

Jan 21, 2007 in , , ,

It wasn’t too long ago that I wrote about The Venice Project (now named Joost) and how it was a unique online video content provider. Online video distribution has made its mark and isn’t going anywhere. Zudeo is one such distribution site that has been getting larger every day. Just last month, Zudeo partnered with BBC. Hopefully there will be more to come. Continue Reading »

Widgets: Friend or Foe? (14)

Jan 19, 2007 in ,

The New York Times devoted an article to widgets yesterday - you know the kind that are typically found on blog sidebars. It was only in the last two years that widgets have started to gain a strong momentum. Bloggers thrive on them and now there’s an overpriced conference for widgets as well as many widget-focused startups. Continue Reading »

World’s Fastest Hard Drive in 2.5-inch Format (3)

Jan 16, 2007 in , ,

Not too long after making us all salivate with the announcement of a 1TB drive, Seagate will be releasing a 15k RPM 2.5-inch hard drive under their Savvio line of drives. The enterprise class 2.5-inch disk drive only stores 36GB even with perpendicular recording technology, while the 3.5-inch version stores 73GB. For the first time in a while, the smaller 2.5-inch drive actually has the upper hand for many reasons - decreased power consumption, Continue Reading »

Jan 16, 2007 in , ,

With a name like Netflix, you’d think that Netflix would offer more than just mail-order DVD rentals. Well, it’s going to happen. Netflix will be offering subscribers the ability to watch movies and TV shows on their computer for no extra charge. It will be rolling out over the next six months but only for 1,000 movies and shows at the moment, compared to the 70,000 DVD titles currently offered by Netflix. Continue Reading »

Twitter Vulnerability Surfaces (9)

Jan 14, 2007 in ,

Twitter, everyone’s favorite useless yet addictive global away message service thing, seems to have been exploited by a user. Whenever someone visits twitter.com/x and is currently logged into their Twitter account, their Twitter message will say something along the lines of “Looking at Bon’s Twitter page”. I fell victim to this earlier today after I saw a friend’s Twitter say that. Continue Reading »

I was just talking to Zach Hale about what we’re each taking this semester and I figured a few of you might be interested in the coursework I’m pursuing. Zach’s doing an Informatics major so he was telling me about his cool database class dealing with JSP, Tomcat and PostgreSQL. I’m taking 4 classes this semester: Continue Reading »

PaulStamatiou.com Widget #3 (3)

Jan 11, 2007 in , , ,

Reader Jason Sanzone made a nifty RSS widget for OS X users. You might recall that Anthony Deloso made a Yahoo! widget for pstam.com back in the summer, after I got my own OS X dashboard widget listed on Apple. Thanks Jason!

Facebook Goes Mobile (9)

Jan 10, 2007 in , ,

In the smallest sense of the word, Facebook has expanded to include mobile phones today. Just visit m.facebook.com with your web-enabled phone to interact with the mobile-optimized site. I say “in the smallest sense of the word mobile” because it’s not adding much to the features and offerings. On the other hand, groovr is a social network I see as being highly mobile.. almost more mobile-oriented than not. Continue Reading »

My Thoughts on Today’s Stevenote (29)

Jan 09, 2007 in , , ,

Today’s keynote speech by Steve Jobs at MacWorld in San Francisco brought us several things - the hyped-up iPhone and Apple TV. On the side, Apple silently released an upgraded Airport Extreme base station with 802.11n capability. If you have a 24-inch iMac and buy the Airport Extreme, you can enable 802.11n in your iMac with the bundled software. Other currently shipping Macs have 802.11n built-in. Unfortunately, there was no mention of any new iPod or Mac. Continue Reading »

The Venice Project is Coming (16)

Jan 07, 2007 in , , ,

Update: The Venice Project is now Joost. Over the last few weeks beta testers have been having some fun with The Venice Project, a highly-anticipated streaming television service. With the growing availability of high bandwidth connections from 8Mbit cable offerings to 30Mbit Verizon FIOS lines, there’s no wonder why everything these days is high-quality and on-demand. The only thing we don’t have yet is high-quality and on-demand streaming television without the need for a TV tuner. Continue Reading »

Feed MIA at the Moment (17)

Jan 06, 2007 in ,

I just got back to Atlanta to find out that my RSS feed doesn’t seem to be working. I’ll look into this after I unpack. Update: Hrm, now I’m getting “Server returned HTTP Error 500: There was a problem retrieving the feed” with the fix mentioned in the comments. Update 2: I just undid the fix and it seems to be working, weird. Update 3: Nevermind, the feed is acting up again. Just put the fix back and resync’d, we’ll see what happens.

FYI: WordPress 2.0.6 Released (7)

Jan 05, 2007 in , , ,

WordPress 2.0.6 is out and it’s being classified as a “pretty important release” with some major security fixes. In addition, HTML quicktags now work in Safari browsers in this release. That’s one of the bigger reasons that kept me from using Safari regularly so that’s great news to hear.

1 TeraByte to be at Your Disposal Soon (5)

Jan 05, 2007 in , ,

I remember when 750GB drives were all the rage, but Hitachi’s Deskstar 7K1000 drive has dropped my jaw. The retail is only $399! Several months after the 750GB drives became mainstream it wasn’t uncommon to see them selling for $500. Along with the increased disk space, the 7K1000 features a needed buffer increase to 32MB. Daylife is Really Neat (11)

Jan 04, 2007 in , ,

Unlike Arrington, I am thoroughly pleased with Daylife - an up and coming startup changing the way we absorb news. Particularly, I find the “covers” method of discovering news stories to be a powerful method of overseeing content. Clicking a cover takes you to the topics page where Daylife aggregates stories for the cover from various news sources. I showed it to Continue Reading »

Webjam - Personalized, Socialized Homepages (3)

Webjam, not to be confused with the Webjam Session conference, is another in the seemingly crowded startup market for do-it-all sites. When you create an account, Webjam automatically makes a few pages for you - one for your Webjam blog, one for your actual homepage and then one for your personal profile. Continue Reading »

Ziki - The Social Network That Sponsors Your Name (20)

Jan 02, 2007 in , ,

Ziki is another social network that has been making waves lately - primarily because the first 10,000 Ziki users get their name sponsored in Google, Yahoo and MSN for free. Ziki is loosely defined as a social network and I think it focuses more as a personal content aggregator while allowing you to promote your work and skills. Continue Reading »
