Cheap DSLR - an Oxymoron until Today

Nov 16, 2006 in , ,

When you think of a DSLR camera, some clunky and expensive professional camera usually comes to mind, right? Nikon is breaking that misconception with their new D40 camera - Nikon’s smallest and most affordable DSLR to date. It has a generous 2.5-inch LCD display and 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor with 3 point focusing. The D40 will run you 6 C-notes.

  1. C-Notes are the shiznit.

  2. Smallest but not the lightest;) It looks good though. I have been using the Oly’s E-500 and that is a great deal too @699.95 with two lenses included…

BTW Paul, love your blog. Lots of useful stuff. I’m switching to Mac OS X when I get back from my trip and your articles keep reminding me every time why I should have done it long time ago;)))

  3. Paul I can’t help but notice a more “advertised” presence of reviews as of late…. I hope this doesn’t have anything to do with that Review it site you signed up for… I enjoy hearing about the things you find interesting, not the things other companies pay you to find interesting.

  4. 1st off, love the blog Paul, avid reader.

What stinks about this is I just bought a Canon PAS last week for about $500, I coulda just waited and saved up an extra $100 and got me a good dSLR.

(The Camera I bought was the Canon PowerShot S3 IS)

  5. @Shane - this was just something I found cool. Anything that I am given to review, I always state the disclosure. Hope that clears things up.

  6. Wow, $600? That is cheap. I’ll still have to wait until it’s on sale though.

  7. The Canon EOS 400D costs only $300 more and makes MUCH better photos. It’s 10 megapixels, but it’s not the a megapixel count that matters, it has a great picture quality.

  8. Thanks for the tip Paul; I need a SLR like this :).

  9. Who knows where i can get the cheapest deal for the new Canon 400D with lens?
    Thanks Adam

  10. The price isn’t much difference than Nikon D50, so I guess you’re better off with it anyway

  11. If you are a beginner look for Olympus Camedia E-10 most controls on SLRs can be found on E-10. I bought mine at ebay it only cost $250

  2. [...] PaulStamatiou.com just reported on Nikons release of the D40. I am somewhat of a photography enthusiast and my biggest problem at the moment is the cost of DSLR cameras. Here in S.A. the pricing starts close to R8000 (roughly $1000). These things aren’t cheap. Nothing is cheap in S.A. anymore? [...]
