Intel Officially Releases Core 2 Duo Processor

Jul 27, 2006 in , ,

At a press release (which I was invited to, but couldn’t attend) at Santa Clara Intel HQ this morning, Intel CEO Paul Otellini outlined the new processors. The Conroe-based E6700, E6600, E6400 and E6300 Core 2 Duo processors rounded-off the desktop line while a Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 made its debut. In addition, Intel launched their Merom-based mobile chips, the 7600, T7400, T7200, T5600 and T5500. Prices aren’t yet set in stone but the Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 will likely retail for $999.

Intel hopes to abide by an ambitious schedule to ship out 1 million Core 2 Duo processors in the next seven weeks. Hopefully, some of these Core 2 Duo Merom chips will make it into updated MacBook and MacBook Pro’s by holiday season as The Apple Core blog predicts.

  1. Nice, I’ve been waiting for this announcement and it came earlier than I thought. How did you score an invite?

  2. One of the PR firms working with Intel (or something like that) contacted me. It would have been awesome to attend but I’m trying to meet a deadline with some stuff at Yahoo!. That and Santa Clara wouldn’t exactly make for a cheap taxi cab ride.

  3. This is great news. Apple should upgrade their Macbooks with this chip, but i hope it doesn’t get as warm like the Intel Core Duo. Sometimes my Macbook could get real hot.

  4. Paul… don’t sweat the hot MacBooks. Come winter, you and I, as well as any other MacBook owner, will be outside in the cold typing away and browsing on a wifi network with toasty legs and hands. I can’t wait until the windows frost over. Immediately after closing my MacBook and preparing to pack up for the day, I’m going to place my MB on the dashboard to get the windows cleared up.

  5. ahahah Derek that is great. I decided to consolidate alot of my camping gear into my Macbook. Now I have a frying pan, bed warmer, portable light, and power outlet (USB) all in one small 6 pound package. Beat that Dell!
