ArsTechnica has the scoop on a new feature Microsoft recently added into builds of Windows Vista. The new feature, called Previous Versions, is enabled for users with the System Protection setting enabled. Previous Versions is similar to System Restore points but on a per file and per folder scale. It shadows copies of files whenever they’re edited, allowing the user to revert to several previous versions [click to continue…]

Hack A Day featured a reader that was intuitive enough to think that the green LED that’s on when you’re not using your mouse is just wasting power. Yeah the power LED is a bit of a usability-inspired indicator to see if your mouse works, but who needs that little gem when you can reclaim up to 4% of your juice? Mr. Sripracha shows how to disassemble the [click to continue…]

The last computer peripheral I need to replaced before having a complete Apple setup was my mouse. For many years, I have been extremely fond of Logitech mice. Ergonomics, performance and features – Logitech mice have it all. When the MX1000 was released, I was the first guy in my dorm to get one and have never regretted the purchase. The [click to continue…]

Today I took another full-day outing with Bryan Veloso and Phil Freo. We had just planned to go superkarting (think fast go-karts) but one thing led to the next and we went all over the San Jose/Palo Alto area. I’ll let the pictures do the talking this time.. but after lunch at Oakridge Mall and then superkarting in [click to continue…]

It’s Hot in LA

July 28, 2006 · 14 comments

Sorry for the almost 2 hours of downtime earlier today. Apparently a generator caught fire in the datacenter (the Garland building in LA) where (mt) servers live. Actually, it wasn’t just Media Temple. It seems as though DreamHost also runs its servers out of the same datacenter. A friend hosted at DreamHost told me that the building had a [click to continue…]

Flip4Mac Universal Binary Released

July 28, 2006

After lingering in a non-existent then beta phase for what seemed like an eternity, Flip4Mac has been released as a Universal Binary. As most people know, Microsoft has never been fond of supporting Mac users, so when Intel processors were introduced to the Mac, Microsoft could care less about getting its outdated Windows Media [...]

At a press release (which I was invited to, but couldn’t attend) at Santa Clara Intel HQ this morning, Intel CEO Paul Otellini outlined the new processors. The Conroe-based E6700, E6600, E6400 and E6300 Core 2 Duo processors rounded-off the desktop line while a Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 made its debut. In [...]

Exclusive: The Next Todos (Awesome OS X App)

July 25, 2006

This past weekend I talked about a great little application called Todos. While many passed it off as a novelty application with little use, thousands flocked to its unique approach as an application finder and launcher. The screen capture that Chris Messina put in his flickr photostream received over 10,000 hits in only [...]

List of Web-Based RSS Aggregators

July 25, 2006

Allyn Edmonds has a very impressive list of over 100 web-based RSS readers. He mentions a bit about each aggregator as well. I don’t think I’ve ever come across such a comprehensive list of aggregators. Nice work Allyn. Particularly, I enjoyed Feed Rinse, a feed filtering service, and My AOL. [...]

Why I Pay for Music

July 24, 2006

Browsing through my iTunes library yesterday, I realized something. I buy a lot of music. Using my peers and college friends as an example, I am one of the few people that actually purchases music anymore. It’s really an appalling concept these days – everyone’s a pirate. Right now you’re probably [...]

July 24, 2006

As Technorati founder David Sifry explains, the popular blog and tag search engine Technorati turned 3 years old today. Sifry and crew pulled off an amazing redesign which IMO increases usability a ton. I might have to update my previous article now. There are tons of new features so go check it [...]

July 23, 2006

Yup, you’ve guessed it. It’s time for another meme. Mr. Olthuis has so generously tagged me to participate in the top 5 social media tools meme. This was actually in good time because I had been pondering such a post about sites that I couldn’t live or blog without. Let the meme begin. [...]

How To: Make My Header Badge

July 23, 2006

Several people have asked me how I created the header image in my sidebar, so I figured I would make a post out of it. Most of the stuff is easy to do, the only area of contention being the creation of the shape layer. To start out, find an image or color [...]

Todos Displays Your OS X Apps

July 22, 2006

Strolling through my flickr feeds I landed upon the photo below in Chris Messina’s photostream. It’s from an innovative little application called Todos. Todos, which means “all of them” in Spanish, displays a window showing each icon for every application on your Mac. Clicking on an application’s icon launches it. Todos is essentially [...]
