Next Stop Sunnyvale
A few weeks ago I was contacted by Yahoo! through my website. At first I just thought it was another piece of spam, but out of curiousity I replied to the email. Sure enough, the response I got did not contain a spoofed email header and seemed to be legit. Yahoo! wanted to let me know about a new internship opening. After several phone calls, dozens of emails and a pile of paper work, everything has worked out. This Friday I will be heading to Sunnyvale, California to work for Yahoo! as a Blogger Intern. I can’t exactly say what I’ll be doing yet, but I’ll be sure to give you guys the link to whatever I’m working on over there. As for what’s going to happen on this front, I will still be blogging here with the time that I find after work. But until I find my bearings, posting here might be erratic at best.
I think the best part of this experience, apart from visiting California for the first time, will be the networking I will be doing there. Meeting new people as well as people that I have previously met online. Aside from intern work, there will be a lot to do. I plan to attend at least part of BarCamp San Francisco, go to the Flock headquarters, meet Bryan Veloso, Chris Messina, some 9rulers and many other influential tech people. I would also like to venture out, see the Golden Gate bridge and perhaps Apple and Google HQ… typical tourist stuff. If you know of any cool things I must see, do, eat or buy while in the San Francisco/Sunnyvale area please drop a comment.
Wow, that sounds like a great opportunity! Make the most of it. Meet as many people as you can. Networking is the best way to get jobs and stuff. Good luck with the internship.

Congrats Paul, you deserve it. You have done an extraordinary job with your blog. I have a couple of buddies at Adobe that might be willing to give you a tour of their office if you are interested. The Google campus is very nice, especially coming from Texas. The closest thing we have to that are the Dell and HP campuses, but they pale in comparison.
Now that sounds like one hell of an opportunity for you!

Definately test out Neto’s Sausage Company on a Friday or Tuesday for the best barbequed sausage you will ever ever eat. It’s a frequent hotspot for the employees of the Silicon Valley. You won’t be disappointed, I swear.

* Irish Coffee at Buena Vista (if you’re over 21, can’t remember)
* Alcatraz
* Chinatown
* The great California Redwoods
* The Lucasarts Tour (they are at the Presido near the national park)
* JWZ’s DNA Lounge (they have under 21 nights)
There’s a few, I’m sure I’ll think of more - one of my favorite towns!

Paul, congrats!!! I used to live in Sunnyvale a few years back when I worked for Netscape (before AOL), I was a college recruiter. It’s a nice place and the people are fairly friendly. I would definatley check out the places that Matt suggested and I’m sure your new co-workers will have a bunch of suggestions as well. Interns are treated like royalty in the Valley so make the most of it and definatley network as much as you can. If you need any information about the area, drop me a line, I’d be more than happy to assist. BTW: I’m still in the area if you need a tour guide.
Hey, way to go! It turns out that blogs are actually a really good way to attract internship/job offers. If you make something good, people will notice! Good luck this summer! Have fun.
My only advice for the SF area would be to eat at an “In ‘N Out”. I didn’t believe it until I finally tried it for myself, but it’s the only fast food that I would consider truly “good”. Tasty.
Good luck Paul! Love the west coast baby! Since it’s your first time to CA I predict you will fall in love with it as much as everyone else in “the biz” has as well. Make sure you get over to Palo Alto and Cupertino. ;)

If you have a rental car, you should try to get to Great America sometime (in Santa Clara). The rollercoasters are awsome.
