HOW TO Quickie: Find Out What’s UB and What’s PPC

Apr 26, 2006 in , ,

Wondering why one of your OS X applications seems a little sluggish on your Intel Mac? Maybe it is running through Rosetta translation and could be a PPC application. Well there is an easy way to find out via Activity Monitor. Fire up Activity Monitor in Applications » Utilities. You will see a column on the right labeled kind. Simply enough it tells you whether that application is “Intel” or “PowerPC.” This is especially good for Mac users that have just switched to an Intel Mac and have kept many of their old applications, letting them pinpoint what needs to be upgraded.

  1. You can also find out if the application is PowerPC or UB by using ‘Get Info’ in the Finder. It’s listed under Kind - Application (PowerPC) or Application (Universal). But I guess your way would probably be more efficient for an overview.

  2. or you can also go to the apple in the right hand corner and click about this mac and then say more info then go to software and click on applications and it will show every app you have on your computer and weather or not it is UB.

  3. Nice, you updated those text headers. Also it seems as if your sidebar is comming along nicely. I like the new clean subscription links.

  4. i always used weisheng’s method! thanks for the insight
