Never Edit Files over Wi-Fi

Apr 18, 2006 in , , , ,

I was touching something up in my sidebar.php file on Wi-Fi in the student center and it cut-out mid-upload. I will hastily make a sidebar file right now, as I don’t have any backups. =/

  1. Also, don’t use WinSCP as your FTP client even if your university’s OIT recommends it.

  2. Use SmartFTP in windows, and as i said i like the sidebar better now.

  3. haha, better yet, upload through Wi-Fi but just make sure your connection is solid. I’ve only used Wi-Fi at my house for over a year, no problems here.

  4. If it isn’t wired, I don’t trust it. That is like having a cell phone converation without saying “can you repeat that?”. WinSCP isn’t bad, I use it all the time, I blame it on the Wi-Fi. Maybe it is time to do a FTP client roundup?

  5. Man, that stinks. I haven’t encountered that problem before, and I’m sure glad I haven’t. I guess if you’re stuck with unreliable WiFi, you could upload the file with a different name, then swap the file name on the server once it’s uploaded properly.

  6. And I witness it LIVE! hahaha

  7. The sidebar looks way better now

    a blessing in disguise

  8. I always make a backup of files before editing, just in case something like this happens.

  9. Nice subtle improvements on the sidebar. Regarding Wifi file transfers… It’s Wifi, what can you expect. Although, I’ve discovered the few times that I did lose connection mid-upload, the transfer was indeed sent. That seems to happen a lot if I’m sending out emails through Gmail. I get the prompt to try again at a different time when the message was indeed sent.

  10. I used to backup all my files before uploading or whatever. Lately though, I’ve been getting cocky and just doing it on the fly like you did. I’m sure mine is coming soon…

  11. Okay, everything seems to be back to normal. Boy did that scare me. Luckily the transfer corrupted about 20 lines down so I was just barely able to save the code for social bookmarking and the night before I had moved all of the subscribe code to it’s own php file.

But yeah as everyone else seems to have echo’d, the new sidebar look with “modules” is downright fly.

  12. I’ve had WiFi give out on me when I’m not even using it.

    Boot up Windows
See the “Limited or no connection”
    Plug in Cat-5e
