Intel Merom Processor Works in Mac Mini

Mar 30, 2006 in , , ,

Okay so first it was the Core Solo to Core Duo CPU swap that was all the rage. Now it appears as though Intel’s upcoming mobile processor, codenamed Merom, works in the Intel Mac Mini flawlessly and boasts up to a 19 percent speed increase over the 2.16GHz T2600 Core Duo (keep in mind, the Core Duo Minis that Apple sells only sport the 1.66GHz model). My friend and roommate for next year, Chris Morrell, has the rest of the story on his site.

  1. Wow I must admit that you’re very up on it when it comes to mini macs. So that means that you’ll have a mini mac with 64 bit support. Since I’m purchasing a laptop I have to keep up with the latest Intel Core Duo news.

I wonder if waiting for Memrom is worth it? Just how important is 64 bit? I know photoshop has 64 bit support but how long will it be before us 32 bit users become obsolete? Who knows?

  2. nice to see apple really shape up when it comes to performance in case you are using ub’s .) the main aspect interesting to me will be whether or not apple’s whole line up will provide socketed cpu’s who are open to pin compatible processor. I wouldnt mind upgrading my mac from times to times … I wouldnt mind either be able to do a cpu upgrade that easily…

  3. With upgradeable sockets, Macs will achieve longer useable lifetimes and encourage more “enthusiasts” to switch over to a Mac. I myself will be buying a MacBook Pro, so long as I can run XP on it.

Thanks for the link Paul, the added traffic made me feel good, finally people are reading what I write. Website looks really good by the way.

  4. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise because Intel announced that Merom would be pin-compatible with the current Yonah processors. Much like those of us who had first Banias processors (first gen Pentium M’s) and we upgraded to Dothans. All Dell, Toshiba, IBM, etc. laptops coming with Core processors can also upgrade to Merom.

  1. [...] Like the mac mini but disappointed in it’s anemic processor options? No worries! Intel’s looming Merom processor will work in the mini with no hacks. [...]
