Java 5 Seeded to OS X Users

Nov 22, 2005 in , ,

The latest release of Sun’s Java has finally been deemed good enough for OS X users. By default the JVM in OS X is J2SE 1.4.2. Wondering if an updated iTunes (to address some recent security issues) would be released, I clicked Apple > Software Update… tonight. No iTunes in sight, but a welcomed Java update was discovered. However, J2SE 5.0 R3 will apparently coexist with J2SE 1.4.2 as mentioned in the installer:

Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3 includes version 1.5.0_05 and improves functionality of J2SE 5.0 on Mac OS X v 10.4 Tiger 10.4.2 and later. This release does not replace the existing installation of J2SE 1.4.2.

  1. Hi paul I’m neo like you a student and I’ve also a site (but in French I don’t know if anyone here knows speaking or reading French) and I would like to thank you for providing the world such good contents. Really I have also to publish things on my site but you know the writing stuff I didn’t much love it until I read your articles, they really gave me inspirations and I decided to start writing good articles.

Your articles are well structured and the language is easy to follow up now I know why you want to be a magazine writer. So don’t give up I think one day you’ll reach your goal.

By the way there are some ideas on your site that I would like to use: you know the one in your archieve section where the links are coloured and weighed (and some others) , so can I.

If one day you happen to speak French and visited my site only to see some of your ideas there : that would really make you piss off, that’s why I’m asking you if I can use it.

    Thanks a lot.

  2. I got mine, but who uses Java? :)

  3. I am still on 10.3.9 and I wish they would allow Java 1.5 to be installed on that. I hate the fact that Java has to be special tailored to be installed (and run correctly) on OS X. Do you think its going to change and be a little better with the move to x86 architecture?

  4. neo: Feel free to use my Live Archives CSS.

  5. I agree with Dave- is there any way I can get java 5 for 10.3.9? I don’t want to pay for tiger, and I need 5 for my degree! argh!
